This was such a senseless crime. They killed this man and only walked away with $20. What's even more sad is that one suspect is a Morehouse student and some of the other suspects are former students. I really feel bad for this young man's family.
Carlnell Walker escaped Richmond's rough streets and was making it as a "Morehouse Man" at the all-male, historically black college in Georgia, until he was tortured, beaten and stabbed to death.
On Friday, just hours before Walker, 23, was laid to rest in the East Bay, authorities in Georgia said they had arrested three men who allegedly killed Walker because they were after thousands of dollars they thought he had received from an insurance settlement.
He hadn't -- and his killers walked away with $20 after tearing off his dreadlocks, beating and stabbing him, and stashing his body in the trunk of a car, authorities said. Police found Walker's body July 8, weeks after his friends and family last saw him alive.
A fourth suspect is being sought in the slaying, said Clayton County Assistant Police Chief Jeff Turner.
The assailants hoped to get most of a $3,000 insurance payment they believed Walker would be receiving as a settlement for being hit by a car months earlier, police said.
They didn't believe his claims that he hadn't received any money, so they doused him in flammable liquid and beat and stomped him unconscious, Turner said. Walker's killers used electrical tape to tie him up and gag him, the assistant chief said, and stabbed him and stole all the money they could find in his rented home in the Atlanta suburb of Riverdale -- $20.
"They wanted the money -- that's all they wanted is the money," Clayton County police Capt. Chris Butler told reporters Friday. "They were going to ensure that they tried to solicit the information of where this money was located in the residence, so that is why the extensive torture and beating occurred."
Arrested were Miles Jonathan Allen, 21, of Atlanta, a Morehouse College student, and former Morehouse students Breylon Wendell Garland, 20, of College Park and Keith Jerome Roberts Jr., 22, of Atlanta, Turner said. A fourth suspect, a former Morehouse student identified only as "Rahim," is being sought.....
