Mexican Presidential Race

Story on MSN

Mexico's in about the same spot we were with Bush/Kerry. The country is pretty well equally divided with liberals and conservatives, and the election is extremely close. According to the news on Univision last night, the conservative candidate, had a narrow lead (it's estimated that only about 300,000 votes are going to separate the winner). The official vote count doesn't start until Wednesday. Then, the winner doesn't take office until Jan. 2007. The current president, Vicente Fox, is from the conservative PAN party.

Maybe whoever wins will actually try to clean up the country.

Although it's doubtful.

Apparently a few people, because it's on MSN's frontpage.

I didn't realize we weren't supposed to care about what's going on in other places of the world. I must have forgotten that the world revolves around US Politics only.

Try not to forget next time.

And with this new administration will there be massive social and economic reform? An end to local and national political corruption? An end to illegal human/drug trafficing to other countries? Probably not.

I agree, probably not. But if Obrador wins, they could end up going hugely in the WRONG direction.

But it's the same with an administration change in the US. Rarely have we had a huge social or economic reform with a US admin. change. No comment about the political corruption.

If one never has been in any part of Mexico, there is The's and the not's. Period.

Hell, they are Poloticians, speak out of both sides of the mouth!

Nothing has changed for years there.

Maximillian of Mexico is entombed in Vienna if anyone cares?

Why do You think that all are trying to come to good old USA?

God, I would love to President of Mexico, but would have to have a cadre of body guards and True Army Personell!

Most of them dont know what that is.

off-topic:

is the mexican army back in mexico now? Or are they still helping with Katrina in new orleans.

That makes us look bad. No offence to Mexico, but come on.

They returned south of the border some time ago. And they didn't try to take back the Alamo. Not unless they want another war with the USA.

Remember the Alamo!

Why?

Because Texas says so...

Looks like Obrador is stealing some pages from the Al Gore playbook -- lose the election, then claim victory. When that doesn't work, claim there was a conspiracy against you.

And, if nothing else, he can probably wiggle some with the 200,000 absentee ballots that were mailed in from the US.

Well, Calderon, the conservative, was declared the official winner. His major platforms are a revitalization of the job market and the fact that his personal bank account, which he publicized, contains aprox 35,000 pesos, or around $3,500 US. I heard him speak last night, and while I know he's still a politician, he seems to be a "for the little people" type guy.

ETA: I just read an article that he has already offered his opponent, Obrador, a seat in his cabinet.
