Bush's Speech
damn, and i thought there would have been a thread on it.
anyone catch it? thoughts?
i agree on some of his points..particularly that english should be a requirement. it'll be difficult to implement some of the things that he had spoken of, but overall...not a bad job from someone who i usually think is an idiot.
every dog has it's day, lol.

Why wasn't there mention of securing the borders north and consequences for those who illegally enter by plane or boat?
The guest worker program sounded vague. I see loopholes and lawyers not far behind.

I missed the speech but I am very curious about the 6,000 guardsman that are to be securing the southern border. Bush wants the burden to be on CA, NM, TX, and AZ but with all of the recent cutbacks of the guards funding, and all of the deployments that are going on now I don't see it possible unless they send troops from all of the states.

i dont think people from canada are coming over to the united states in heards like they do from mexico. but it does make the situation look bad when we just consider one border.

It's hard to campare the Canadian border with the Mexican border, just because they are so different. I know a lot of Canadians who may work here or go to school here( in the states ) but at the end of the day where do they go home to? Canada. Also, Canada is a much more prosperous country than Mexico, so Canadian border jumpers are probably very few.

I guess we'll just have to end those farm subsidies we provide to businesses that don't need it and import our food from Mexico and pay $1.50/hr instead?

Yep, nothing to worry about at the Canadian border.. only the terrorists come in that way.
It is completely and totally impossible to enforce the US/Canadian border because of the waterways. You can't have border patrol at every dock along the entire Great Lakes. I live about 2 miles from Lake Erie though and after 9/11, they implemented some checkpoints/roadblocks, where they checked each person for citizenship/immigration papers. I had to stop driving along that route because I couldn't be stopped every time I had to run to the store or take the kids to school. It was pretty ridiculous. These checkpoints were also advertised on the news, so people knew to avoid them, including those who were smuggling people into the country.

I live right off Lake St. Clair and there are always Coast Gaurd boats and helicopters patrolling the area.
I've never seen a checkpoint in this area, they sound like a hassel.

If they aren't stopping every boat as it docks somewhere, then they don't have much control. The boat traffic on a summer day from Lake Erie up to Lake St. Clair is massive. How do they know if there are illegal aliens on all those boats?
Thankfully, the checkpoints didn't last long.

While this is a good point (they probably can't know), you should take solace in the fact that, to my knowledge (and the knowledge of both the US and Canadian government AFAIK), no terrorists have committed acts after entering illegally through Canada - most 9/11/01 terrorists entered on false (but 'legal') documentation.
Just thought I'd help out!
