If you've done some online research, good for you-- next step: Call SHSU. Their office of Greek Life should have someone on staff who can answer your questions.
Regarding recs, you need to talk to all your friends, relatives, your friends' relatives, teachers and family friends. Once you have exhausted this route, contact the Alumnae Panhellenic in your hometown. An Alumnae Panhellenic is the organizing body of sororities from the alumnae perspective and they have local chapters. You can get their contact information by calling the National Panhellenic Conference HQ (go to
www.npcwomen.org for the number). Likely, if you live in TX, Alumnae Panhellenics are in high season for preparing recs. You'll need to call them and set up a meeting. The group will probably farm you out to have informational meetings with various alumnae who may help you secure your remaining recommendations.
The most important next step is making those phone calls. Good luck! As far as SHSU goes, you are best getting your recs in order, practicing answers to various questions you may be asked (IE: Tell me about yourself/Why are you interested in being in a sorority), and getting your attire settled. From there, go in with an open mind, ignore any idle gossip you may hear about the sororities and go into this experience to look for the chapter where you feel most at home. Good luck!
