Moving to Birmingham

So I'm going to be moving to Birmingham, AL in a month. I know some about the city as far as cool bars etc, but I need to know of a nice, inexpensive area to live. I know Southside, Downtown, Homewood areas have a lot of college aged people and so I want to live in that area, but I will be working in Pelham, what kind of traffic is there going south on I-65 during rush hour?

Any opinions, information etc will be apreciated.

Thanks,
-Mark

I go to school in a suburb of Birmingham, and the traffic around Pelham and Oak Mountain at rush hour is TERRIBLE! And so is Highway 280... just awful...

I would tell you what back roads to take, but I'm not originally from Birmingham and my mom won't let me have my car at school until next year when I'm a junior.

I always ride with my sorority sisters whenever I go anywhere in Birmingham... it's awesome

Not to disagree here, but I wouldn't recommend Alabaster to anyone. If you can afford it I would advise you to live around Homewood or the Summit. Bham is a pretty young city, so you'll likely find people anywhere. There is a lot to do in southside, but I wouldnt want to live there because it can get pretty sketchy. A fraternity brother of mine actually lived in Pelham for a while, and he had a pretty nice place and liked it. Its convenient because you don't have to deal with as much traffic (Bham is pretty rough, but a breeze compared to Atlanta). However, like you I'd rather live somewhere closer to the city than Pelham, but its something to think about.
