It's paczki day! (poonch kee)

Is this a Michigan thing because of our high Polish population or are paczki a big deal on "Fat Tuesday" everywhere?

If you don't know what they are... they are a polish donut which is the biggest, most fat laden jelly donut you've ever seen. People line up at bakeries to get them today and they will be all over the place. It's our little version of Mardi Gras I guess... eat up today because tomorrow Lent begins (and is a day of fasting).

I've never heard of them ... and my roommate is Polish.

Around here (eastern PA/western NJ) they're called fastnachts or something like that. The first time I heard of them was on the news this morning. They're even selling them in the cafeteria here at the hospital.

I've never had them, but I know that they're part of the Pennyslvania Dutch culture. I'm not sure if they're the same as Paczi or not, because I've never had them, either! They DO sell those around here.

Yes, it is Pennsylvania Dutch culture, I learned that on the news today, lol. I don't really know if they're the same either, I just know they're both types of donuts that you eat on Fat Tuesday, LOL.

Chicago has a large Polish population, so yeah, you do see paczki. I'm always a little sad on this day because my grandma (babcia) made the best paczki when I was little. Nothing in the bakeries comes close.

I try to stay away from those things, paczkis. But yeah, in the Detroit area it's hard not to see them around today. They used to sell them in school during lunch when I was growing up, but I honestly can say that I've only had maybe two in my entire life. Not a big fan of gooey doughnuts.

There are like 15 people who work in my area and 3 of them are off today, 3 are being VERY good and not having any paczki, but one very very bad co-worker brought in 3 dozen of them and they're sitting right outside my cube. The smell of them is starting to make me sick!

My neighbourhood has a high concentration of Polish people. Many of my friends are Polish and I have never heard of these things.

I'd never heard of these until this year, when I moved to Lansing.

Haven't seen any paczki down here, although I'm sure they're selling them up in the Polish section of Baltimore.

I love paczki; heck, I love most Polish food (except for czernina; I won't go near that) but I haven't had much of it since my grandma passed away.

Someone brought in a few dozen today and they sat there the whole day pretty much untouched. Way too sugary for me.

We have a large population of Portuguese here, and they have malassadas, similar to what the Polish have.

On Valentines Day this year, Leonard's Bakery (the father of all malassadas bakeries here) had guava custard filled malassadas. Mmmm..

My boss ordered 3 dozen malassadas today. Add that to all the coffee I drank and you know how I'm feeling right about now.
