tarot card reader

I'm planning a bridal shower for a wedding in August in Madison, WI.

I pretty much hate bridal showers, and so does she. So there will be no "toilet paper bride" games and such. It's basically an excuse for the relatives to meet the friends before the wedding.

I've been involving her because (a) it's pretty far away, so I need help, and (b) it's untraditional, but I still want her to enjoy it. Plus, a lot of her friends are from out of town - e.g. the bridesmaids are currently living in DC, Boston, South Africa, and Ireland - so I figure planning early, and therefore letting THEM plan early, is my best bet.

Anyway. I think we'll have beer and vegetarian (she is one) pizza. I'm trying to think of something to do while we're there, though, since we won't have the typical games.

Having a tarot card reader sounded like it might be fun - untraditional, which is perfect, but still fun. She thinks it's a great idea. I'm not sure how to go about this, though, just short of getting on the yellow pages online and looking it up.

Anyone have any experience? Know about cost, what to expect, etc.? Any tricks to how to choose one? Any other ideas?

That sounds cool. Except for if the tarot reader reads that the marriage will be short and sweet or that he's cheating on her. I guess make sure the tarot person doesn't bum anyone out is what I'm getting at. That would be bad.

But otherwise it sounds cool! That's just the first thing that popped in my mind.

So basically she should find one that's just going to tell them what they want to hear? I can do that for $5 and a plane ticket to Madison.

Seriously, I guess you should consider, do you want a supposed "reputable" or acurate (If you actually believe in that kind of thing) or do you just want someone to blow sunshine up the bride's ass??

Reputable.

Honestly, it'd probably be MORE fun if the bride was told her relationship of 4+ years was a sure failure - she's that great.

I don't know anything about tarot card readers, but I have to say that your ideas are awesome. Pizza and beer -- seriously, you rock.

I know what you're saying, and I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings or anything. It just seemed like if she was going to go to all the trouble of ferreting out a good tarot card reader, it wouldn't make sense for her to then pay her and say..."Now, don't say anything bad, even if tht is how the cards fall".

Try to find a New Age type of bookstore in Madison. It's the type of place that will sell crystals, hemp items, sage, cruelty free makeup, cd's of earthy meditation music, etc... Those type of places usually have freelance tarot readers.

Ask the store manager who'd they'd suggest. As for cost, it varies, in Chicago a twenty minute reading was twenty dollars in store. It's about the same cost as a manicure or pedicure. It's all in fun and not to be taken seriously. You make your own luck.

Avoid the ones who try sell you additional crap for X to happen.

Most sessions are one on one. You may ask the reader one or two questions to focus on or just have a general, what-is-in-my future. Depending on how many women are being invited you might want to get 2 so people aren't bored waiting for their turn.

Any OCCULT/Meta-Physical/newage book store will have some info for you.

Most prof. readers won't tell you that something bad will happen, just to be careful, stay safe with this person etc. A true prof. will not tell you that you will die. Just that you should start to exercise, watch out, etc.

Exactly the kind of info I was looking for!

Anyone know how much the going rate might be for a group?

Hey, thanks. I was worried it'd come off trashy, but she's such a low-key girl, this'd be exactly the kind of thing she'd plan if she was just having a party. And that's the whole point, right?

I'm trying to think of more low-key stuff. I think we'll get the beer from her fav dive bar (they have a microbrew, apparently.) I'm running out of ideas though.

It doesn't help that she's vegetarian. If she wasn't we'd also be having wings.

We had a psychic at my daughter' bridal shower and it was a lot of fun.

The psychic cleaned up though! She let everyone tape their sessions...and she was really on target for a lot of things.

No advice here, but that sounds like an awesome shower I refused to have any of the stupid games at mine. I hope you find someone good!

So what'd you end up doing instead?

I have a girlfriend in Lynchburg, working for the YWCA.... she's got the same impression of the town you do, I think.
