First and foremost, welcome to GreekChat!
hawaiiagd is indeed a sister. She was my Frat Ed advisor when I was a collegian and most recently served as our loving Chapter Advisor!
There is a thread here in the AGD forum that lists our eBay usernames, so please take a look at that when you have time. I only ask that if you see a sister already the highest bidder in an Badge auction, please don't bid against her. We try to keep the price as low as possible because it's hard to think of our hard earned money buying something that rightfully belongs to the Fraternity. Unfortunately we see many of our Badges up for auction pretty often, so chances are you'll see one up again soon.
That being said, please introduce yourself in the AGD Roll Call thread. We'd love to find out more about you!
Loyally,
OTW

Did you see in the new Quarterly that we're not supposed to buy badges and pins on e-bay because it encourages the sale of badges by non-members?
They have a good point but I still hate to think of it falling into the wrong hands...

Maybe we could set up a thing and make it known to the badge buying world that IHQ will pay top dollar to anyone who has an AGD badge, as long as they aren't ebay sellers... I don't know. I agree that it does encourage people to find our badges and want to sell them because they know we will buy them. BUT I also agree that I don't want just anyone to own it.
THE GOOD THING... even if joe blow owns one, it doesn't mean anything to that person because only we know that meaning and value of that badge.

Girls, I don't think that IHQ has the resources to pay top dollar for Badges that end up on the internet. Even if they did, I would prefer that money go to scholarships, diabetes research, leadership training, extension, etc., instead.
I think that its terrible that the Badge gets into the hands of non-members and I hate it when I see one for sale on e-bay. But legally, the Fraternity doesn't have that many options available to stop it. We're creating an artificial market by bidding on them to keep them out of non-members' hands. Leaving ebay alone for a while--or leaving matters to IHQ--may help things cool off a little bit.
This just goes to show you how important it is to fill out your Badge Disposition Form or make it very clear in your estate planning documents what you want done with your Badge once you enter Chapter Grand.

I agree... I've never bid on a badge (I'm on ebay but to be honest I've never bid on anything for lack of funds) and after reading in the Quarterly that we shouldn't I decided not to.
Maybe this new licensing stuff will give us something we can do about people selling badges? I mean, they're not licensed vendors if they're doing something that the Fraternity prohibits already.

I agree Maria, that we don't have funds and I would prefer they go elsewhere... it was just an idea.
As to the licensing of the product... I don't think that that will create any legal ground because they aren't creating a produce or even acting as the orginal seller. They are acting as secondary sellers, just as you are when reselling your car or clothing. It would be hard to get anything to stick... I would think!

but our badge is a licensed mark of the Fraternity. THat should give us control over it being sold by a non-licensed vendor/person, right?

So are ford cars.. they are licensed by the company. I am all for us having complete control, you can look at all the other posts on this topic for proof. Maybe if the company is acting as a primary vendor would we have control but since ebay people aren't primary vendors of this product, it would be really hard.

Yes, the Badge's design is trademarked. But the only thing that trademarking protects from is people using the image of the Badge, mass-producing it, and making money off of it without Alpha Gamma Delta's permission. No one is going to go after individual sellers auctioning a few Badges here and there for trademark violation. It just doesn't work that way.

I have to agree with IHQ on this issue I think buying them off of Ebay will only encourage more people to sell their badges. I'm sure there are a lot of non-active alums out there who would probably consider selling (even if they had a great sorority experience) if they knew they could get money for them. I know a lot of you mean well buying the badges off of ebay, and we all appreciate your efforts, but maybe you could contribute the money instead to the Foundation? Just a thought.

Off Topic shout-out
Hey Lisa!
It's Susan B--I was wondering when I'd see a post from you!
I'll have to read my Quarterly again--I missed the article on Ebay.
As I said in the beginning, it really does break my heart when I see our badges for sale...

It's not really an article, just a little side-note where they talk about licensing and buying Alpha Gam stuff from licensed vendors.
It's towards the back of the magazine, maybe even on the last page.
I'm beginning to wonder if our Greek Store here is licensed. You would think that if they were they wouldn't be selling shot glasses with letters or our crest on it. Hmm...

Thanks!
I'll keep an eye out for it!
From what I understand, all licensing will change sometime this summer, if it hasn't already. Wonder what sort of trouble that will cause for the hundreds of shops (brick and mortar and online) that sell AGD goods...

Hi Susan!! What a small world! Unfortunately I don't have much of a chance to check the boards very often, so I'm sorry it's taken me forever to say hello!!! Hope you're doing well!
