Montana, Bradshaw skip Superbowl XL over money

Reports: Money differences leave QBs out

When the NFL unveiled its MVPs from the previous 39 Super Bowls, only three living members skipped the ceremony.
Former 49ers quarterback Joe Montana and former Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw decided to stay home, while former Dolphins MVP Jake Scott was traveling in Australia.
Montana, the league's only three-time Super Bowl MVP, turned down the invitation over money, Newsday and the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Bradshaw, who told league officials that he wanted to be with his family, also took issue with the fees, the Chronicle reported. Bradshaw, through a representative, denied the Chronicle's report that there was a dispute over money.
Former MVPs were given $1,000 for incidental expenses while in Detroit, along with other amenities such as plane tickets, car rental and game tickets.
Sources told each paper that Montana asked for a guarantee of at least $100,000 in appearance money.
When the league balked at Montana's demands, the quarterback declined to be in attendance.
It would take me $100,000 to go to freaking Detroit too.

I guess you have to consider that offering them $1,000 is like offering one of us average people $1.

Everyone here was wondering where the hell Bradshaw was... we thought the stadium would go nuts when they introduced him, and we were all puzzled as to where he was. The collective guess of group was that his contract with Fox (i think he's with Fox, right?) wouldn't let him.

Well that's too bad, because you would have missed out on a great weekend and Detroit has gotten tons of compliments on how awesome everything went and how much there was for out of towners to do.
Back on topic... that's ridiculous. These guys should feel privileged that they were chosen as MVPs and that they would be wanted back for an appearance. Hell they should feel lucky that they had the opportunity to makes millions doing something they love.

Or maybe he would have hated it - no offense to Detroit, but no city is perfect.
For the topic at hand - I thought it was a little weird that neither of them were at the game. I would have at least Bradshaw would have shown up because of the Steelers angle, like kddani mentioned. He would have been guaranteed a standing O.
Montana seems to be getting his hands in a bunch of endorsements after retirement, so it wouldn't completely surprise me if he held out for the money.

As much as I love Terry Bradshaw (which is a LOT), and Joe Montana is a Western PA boy, I have to agree that, to them, $1,000 isn't much money. I'd like to think that they'd both suck it up and do it anyhow.
There are really so many things that could have been done differently at Super Bowl XL. It was held in Detroit - MOTOWN!! - for starters!! The Rolling Stones had no place being there, especially when you consider some of the racist lyrics of their songs. I can't be the only one who loves the old Motown music; why not a "Best Of" Halftime? Aretha's half of the National Anthem rocked, but Aaron Neville's? His voice just wasn't made for that.
The photos of Detroit were amazing! I admit, I have only been to Detroit's airport (which didn't impress me), but now I have a different outlook of it. It would have been nice to see a bit more, if only as a PR for Detroit.

Bradshaw was just on Leno saying that it wasn't due to money and that he wouldn't take a penny from the NFL to do something that honors him. So who knows?

Yeah yeah so I didn't live in a huge house where hookers walking around were plentiful and bum fishing was a hobby. But hey yeah I'm 10 minute south of Detroit and the downtown area is nice now.

I don't know, it seems terribly petty of both of them to me. I am so over male egos.

How Terry feels about his Steelers tenure changes like I change my underwear. That's nothing new. He might have gotten up in the morning after having a bad dream and decided not to go.

I think it's too bad that two of the really great quarterbacks of all time chose not to attend. It's not like there weren't other "rich and famous" guys who showed up. Money shouldn't mean that much to those two.
If the NFL is/was the hand that feeds you -- why bite it?
