I've noticed that alot of the recruitment dates either start on, go through, or end on Sept. 11th. Up in NY State i know its a big rememberance day. Does panhel ignore its significance, or do you think this is just the way it worked out?

i know that at dominguez hills, way back in the day (ok, 2002) we had welcome week during that time... and for sept. 11th, we had unity day. all the greeks got together and had a chant/step/stroll/etc. event in the sculpture garden. it was pretty awesome.

and iota gamma wore flag letters, in remembrance of 9/11/01.

eta: i don't think panhel (or in our case - the student life dept.) ignores the significance of sept. 11th... i just think that's just when everyone's finally settled in with school and stuff.

plus, and i know this might sound a little off, but, the world can't stop everything every sept. 11th. life must go on.

We actualy postponed rush the first two years after Sept. 11, but now since its been a few years and... it's the most convienent time for our campus, ... we do it even if parties take place on Sept. 11. The year after it happened Panhel took part in our campus's candlelight walk, rush hadn't started yet, so it was just actives... but it was a good event, and a way to show our solidarity.

Welcome Week at CSUDH is Sept 12th-15th this year. I don't think they have anything planned for 9/11 rememberance though. However there is a huge 9/11 rememberance quilt that hangs in our library so we sort of have a rememberance thing going on everyday of the year.

I guess remembrance has become more of a daily thing...there's always something in the news that reminds us how fortunate we are to have each other, and remember those we love.

In regards to 9/11 I wondered about this too. Now I'm Canadian, so some might say I don't get it, but it was odd, when at LTS I was talking to an advisor, archon and one of my programming facilitators trying to set up a chapter visit. They all agreed Sept. 11th was the best date. And i was like, wait a sec, you won't have any memorial or something to do that day? and they just said nope - they'd been planing on having a chapter meeting that day anyway.

Back to the topic at hand - everyone set for recruitment! yay phi sig!
I get to go to a chapter retreat next weekend to do V&R stuff, so that should be fun. (well, technically waiting for approval still)

My chapter never had recruitment retreats so it's great to see them when I can.

I am an Alum of the Zeta Mu chapter and last week was formal recruitment at Florida Atlantic University. I attended 2 nights to assist them.

I will definately say that the sisters had an extreme disadvantage this year. The other chapters on campus are all at around 30, Phi Sig has 18. The other chapters had about 25 sisters in the rooms each night, but Phi Sig had at the most 9 one night. The other night I was there, they had 5.

They had to work extremely hard because of this. They got 8 girls, I beleive and quota was 20. I do not know how many girls each other chapter got, but I do feel that getting 8 was good for their situation.

I am not sure if it was a planning or communication problem, but many sisters had class the week of recruitment and could not show up to the parties. I hope they COB 12 mor girls this fall and do excellent for the year!

CONGRATS to FAU's 8 new Phi Sig's.

<<I am not sure if it was a planning or communication problem, but many sisters had class the week of recruitment and could not show up to the parties. >>

I never understood why panhel would schedule parties during class hours!! Why not just do it over the weekend?

Class Schedule conflicts puts both chapters and PNM's at a disadvantage.

Update

So i have a source at Chapman University in California, my best friend who's in another house, and she told me that our sisters at Chapman University did an amazing job and recruited 28 new Phi Sig's!!! 2 under quota, but i'm sure the girls can COB 2 more.

Its great hearing how well our sisters are doing. Thought I'd let you all know.

Hey Nieg!

You are correct, at Chapman, Epsilon Delta extended bids to 28 girls, and 24 signed. Quota was 30 this year and actually a couple of the bigger houses did not meet quota, so its very interesting...but I think they are trying out a new system which allows the smaller houses to receive more girls. Our house is huge now ! I think it brings the count up 60 or 70 Phi Sigs at CU! Its amazing.

This week is COB so we need to get six girls. We should be able to do it. Hopefully some of the new girls will bring some friends.

Both of the girls I preffed signed their bids which made me feel really good as this was my first recruitment on "the other side".

We did SO well!

Everyone else...how many girls did you get?!

Oh and a PS about the class thing, that happened to us the first night. We didn't drop anyone based on that, but some girls told me they got dropped from the houses they didn't go to. That's really unfair to the bigger houses who have to cut more girls and may have to cut a girl they would really like under other circumstances. Its really silly.

RE: 9/11...of course its a big deal because we're all American, but since we're in California and most kids that go here are from CA, Oregon, Washington, etc., its not really a big thing. Last year when I was a PNM, we did a ceremony for 9/11 before pref night. this year 9/11 was bid day and we didn't do anything. I think the girls were too anxious to get their bids to "make them wait" and do a 9/11 thing.

UNHEARD of., when I joined (only 4 years ago) the largest chapter was 25, now it's 89 !!!! .. I am happy that greek life is growing on my campus, now we must work on getting Phi Sig to grow with it.

Hey Ladies

This last weekend Theta Mu (CSU Stanislaus) had their first ever formal weekend recruitment. In the past Formal Recruitment was held during the week. It was interesting and I was able to help out as an alumna Rho Gamma.

Well on to the exciting part; Theta Mu now has 8 wonderful new members! (Quota was 9. but only 12 girls made it to preference. Nice to add though all 12 are now new members between the two national sororitites here at CSU Stan)

I do believe that both chapters will be doing COR events during the next few weeks to get to total. Phi Sig is 2 or 3 away from total and the other national is maybe like 6 or 7 away.

All in all it was a great weekend. Congrats to the chapters that have already had recruitment and Good Luck to all those that have yet to.
