Penn State Panhel recruits later in year

Penn State to Recruit Later (buried below a report on the success of the school's Dance Marathon)

"Looking forward to next year, Larimer said a "big change" will occur during recruitment periods.

"We voted to push our recruitment back next semester and have it right after homecoming [late October] instead of in September," she said.

Chelsea Diehl, Panhellenic Council vice president of communications, said the council pushed back the recruitment date to give new students additional time to decide if they want to rush.

"We feel that greek life is a positive force, and we want as many people as possible to take part in it," she said. "If incoming freshmen have more of a chance to feel out Penn State and understand what schoolwork is and what they want to do, they will be more apt to want to rush."
---------
Penn State, already one of the later Fall recruitments in the country, has announced plans to wait until after Homecoming to recruit.

Anyone have any thoughts about this?

From what I've heard, quota has been falling since Fall 2002 recruitment. I think this spring, every PHC sorority on campus had some form of a spring pledge class, including sororities that rarely, if ever, have to take girls in the spring. So, I guess they are pushing it back to drum up more interest amongst freshmen.

Maybe this isn't the place to put this but IMO, PSU is more anti-greek now than it was when I was a freshman. Also, given how tuition keeps going up @ Penn State, people just can't afford going greek either.

Will they have time to finish pledging before the end of the semester?

It kind of sucks that the new pledges will miss all the fun of Homecoming.

That's true. Although our rush was RIGHT BEFORE homecoming, so it was pretty overwhelming when you've been a pledge for a week and a half and you have 15 event signup sheets shoved in front of you and the homecoming chair saying "Hey, sign up for a few, it'll be fun".
