Kelly Clarkson won't let her songs be used on AI

Quote:
PASADENA, Calif. - Singer Kelly Clarkson, who vaulted to fame as the first "American Idol" winner in 2002, is not letting any of her songs be used by new contestants on the show.

A spokesman for Clarkson insisted it's nothing personal, but the stance prompted a public scolding from "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell
Do you think she's/her people is/are making a mistake? I can understand other people covering her work and ruining it (remember Madonna's version of American Pie???!!! Cheesy commercials using 1960s hits?), but if I were the only successful American Idol, I'd let them use my work...

I thought Simon Fuller basically "owned" Kelly and all the other American Idol winners and they didn't have squat to say.

My first thought: Why would her songs be used for Alumnae Initiations?

Kelly fired Simon Fuller at the end of her mandatory contract, I believe. But I know he is definitely not her manager anymore.

You guys know I think Kelly can do no wrong, so I'm biased, but . . .

I don't think there's anything wrong with this, for two reasons:

1) It just seems a little incestuous . . . I'm not sure how to explain it better than that, but why would you WANT to cover another Idol's songs anyway?

2) Cowell is an ass who tries to rape all the AI contestants out of any possible profit, and I'm not surprised if any of them are feeling less than generous towards him.

I'm totally with you. Cowell doesn't have any thoughts other than how he can make more money for himself. While I definetely think she should be thankful for the big break she got, that doesn't mean she should be thought of as the "American Idol Winner" the rest of her career- I mean 20 years from now, would you really take her seriously??? I say go Kelly!

Did Kelly Clarkson write her own songs? I don't know that much about her. If she didn't then I doubt she has much legal control over anyone covering those songs.

Yes, she did co-write quite a few songs on Breakaway.

I saw a couple girls singing "Since U Been Gone" in the initial auditions yesterday and today.

That's what I immediately thought.

And she may have had nothing to do with it. Her lawyers and representation team probably made the decision for her, she probably didn't even know about it.

My copyright law is rusty so I don't know how it works when there's a co-writer- maybe the person(s) who cowrote the song didn't want it.

Plus who wants to hear their hard work get done so horribly?

Totally agree.

If I was her, I wouldn't let them be used either. And its not like she's singling AI out, she's not allowing ANYONE to license her music at this point in time.

All AI's are relieved, I'm sure.

Make that whichever AI you'd like.
