Are High School Fraternities legit?

I have some friends who were in high school fraternities. They basically had greek letters, loose affiliation with other chapters at a few other high schools, and each group had a meeting place and rushed, and had pledging. There was no adult control or supervision, so you can kind of figure these weren't looked upon too highly by the school, but they all had a good time, and made some connections to college fraternities etc.

I think its a big midwest and long island thing.

Not sure if there were sororities or not.

I was a Sigma Tau in HS. No One knew of Greek Organizations in those days.

With the internet there is so much more information today!

But they follow only what they want to and are Idiots.

So, they try to be Adults, Well, They Aint.

There's "Pike" and "Delta" at another town's HS. I don't know much about them, but from what I gather, they sound more like rivals or gangs more than fraternities.

I'm from the midwest and I've never even heard of the notion of HS fraternities until this board. I think if anyone at my high school tried to start a fraternity that they would get beat up...good.

I have never heard of this but did a quick goggle search to see what I could find... found a few, but like most college fraternities pages, they two are very out of date here are a few...

From what I found from this search it seems like this may be popular in the southern Midwest states, I don’t know. I think this is interesting, but I agree I think these are in most cases not very productive. Unless they would have some sort of Teacher supervision. I think the potential for harm is much greater here considering the maturity level of high school students. But this again is just a first impression, thier a defently people that would say the same about college fraternities, just becuase they don't know much about them.

Read Bob Green's (Syndicated columnist) book "Be True To Your School" about parts of his junior and senior years at Bexley High School near Columbus, Ohio. (1964/65)

He was in a high school "fraternity." I think it was entirely local.

I was in school about 15 miles away at exactly the same time, but we didn't have fraternities. Never heard of them, in fact at that time.

My little went to a private school in Pennsylvannia, it was not very big, their were alot of foriegn students and it was extremly religous. They had both sororities and fraternities their, this is not big in PA at all it was the first time I ever met someone in a highschool sororoity. Very interesting.

Just out of curiousity where was that? (I'm in PA too)

My one roommate was from Meadville, PA and said they had sororities at their (public) high school....this was a while ago though so I don't know if they still exist.

On of my pledge sisters went to a private school somewhere in Eastern PA and they had HS sororities as well.

There were 2 HS sororities in Jacksonville, FL. They weren't specific to a school, but most of the members were from the 3 big private schools. I think they were shut down by the schools/parents in 91-92, and don't know if they ever came back. I know we talked about doing it for a little while in 93-94, but never did.

There were no fraternities at my high school or in my town. I'd never heard of it until I saw reference to them on this board.

I had a friend from Brentwood, TN who was in a HS sorority at Brentwood High.

I love that book!

There was a previous thread about this topic and someone did mention a high school fraternity that was national (or regional). Fraternities, sororities and other secret societies were forbidden in my school district. (I grew up in the Chicago area)
