Christmas Gift Advice

Of course, I have been stressing the past month as for what to get everyone for xmas and my dad is the last one but I think that I have FINALLY figured out what I am going to get him... satellite radio! Seems to be the hot item to have...

Anyways, was thinking about Sirius but heard that Stern has a strong affiliation with them. Does anyone know if this is true? Would like to get it for him but wouldn't want to offend him you know? Would it make you uncomfortable?

The only affiliation Howard Stern has with Sirius, that I know of is that he is going to have a station there. If he doesn't like Howard... he doesnt' have to listen to his station.

Well, my friend said that Stern was getting $500M from Sirius and I know that any subscription money that I pay is going to go towards that contract and I just don't think that my dad would be too keen on the idea, you know? would your dad?

My dad is pretty cool so I don't think he'd mind. Speaking of which my mother-in-law shocked me the other day, I would have never taken her for a Stern fan, but she watches the E show everynight. Stern got a $500 million contract to move his show from the terrestrial radio network he is on to their satellite network. Kind of like if Katie Couric was offered that to go from NBC's Today Show to the CBS Evening News (to borrow from another thread). I guess that you can argue that part of the subscription fee would go to home, but divide that by the rest of the stations/personalities on Serius and it would come out to be a VERY small portion.

Stern will probably only have a 4 hours show M-F on one station (they may run repeats at different times), so your Dad wouldn't have to listen to that station during that time if it would offend him. I have XM radio and Opie and Anthony are on there - you can argue that they are just as bad if not worse, but again it's optional whether I listen to them or not. There is also channel blocking available if you want to avoid the tempation at all costs.

Question

Does DAD like Tools? First, is He handy with Tools like I am not?

Does He play golf, fish, garden, camp, cook, cook out, or hunt?

Agree, anything with Howard S is out there, but damn He do make $$$$$$$$$$$$$!

What is Your Budget?

AOIIBrandi , wow you are full of info and great ideas...thanks But 4hours a day every day is a lot...dont you think? I am sure that he will he have his own station where he will have 4 hours of live and the rest of them would be reruns or something dedicated to him, dont you think? And yes, Opie and Anthony are on XM but I don't see a $500 million dollar contract in line...personally that seems absurd and if I went with XM then is not like my money would be supporting a huge contract/promotion like with Stern, you know? And, yes I could argue that it is a very small portion but I don't think that my dad would see it that way...do you see what I am saying? Thoughts?

I don't know anything about the Stern thing...

But I have Sirius through my Dish Network...and I LOVE it!! (Of course that's because they have an Opera station, and I'm probably the only one in the world that listens to it, but that's ok with me, as long as they keep it!! )

I got Sirius radio for my boyfriend for his birthday. He loves it.

I'm assuming Stern is going to have his own radio dial number, so just don't program it into the presets.

Basically the guy at Best Buy told me that there is very little difference between Sirius and XM. The only major difference he pointed out is that XM has more baseball channels and Sirius is more football oriented.

Sirius is betting a lot that Stern will bring a lot of subscribers.

I'm thinking of satellite radio for Mrs. DA, but am hesitant because, while the radios themselves are great deals right now, the person who receives the gift is saddled with monthly subscription charges. Without the subscription, the receiver is worthless.

Satellite radio is fun, though.

Can't you buy a yearly pass or something? Like a gift card.

You can. It's like a year-subscription option and sometimes they have deals on that.

But after a year... you, of course, have to pay again.

Howard will be on Sirius radio starting January 1st. If he doesn't like Howard I wouldn't worry about it too much. Sirius offers 120+ channels of other stuff that he can listen to. It's nice for long trips...if you find a channel that you like you don't have to keep switching stations.

Dont get me wrong, I am all about free speech and believing to just turn off what you dont want to watch but since I have the choice to buy I just dont know that sirius is the brand to go with... I know there will be hundreds of channels to choose from but it is more the association with sirius, you know? I just dont think that my dad will support something a company that highly supports a guy who is going to have a strip pole in his office, you know?

And JenMarie, that is interesting to know about baseball and footbal... my dad loves baseball. hummmm?

NEED GIFT IDEA

My dad wants "cool tshirts." He doesn't know what that means, and I'm not really sure--- what is an appropriate "cool" shirt for a man in his 50s?

Anymore wine recommendations? My boss likes blended reds... Still trying to figure out what to get him.
