I know of some bodybuilders that have done it so that they coul stay really lean easier.

I have heard that you can gain weight back really fast if you haven't mastered your diet and excercise . . I don't know much about it though.

I know some older ladies who've had it and they're fine now, but I keep thinking of all these horror stories you hear about people dying from complications...it's a pretty serious surgery. But I guess it's the only way to go if you've got fat in a certain area that you want gone, because we all know there's no such thing as spot-reducing.

If you're looking for horror stories of this type of surgery, all the major talk shows have had this as a topic at least once.

When a friend in college explored it as an option, it didn't sound easy. For her situation, she was told that she had to lose a certain amount of weight before the surgery. Also before surgery she would have to be put on a strict diet to be followed for at least six months. Post surgery she would have to wear this body shaper type thing for 8 months. She ended up not going through with it .

Wow, that's alot different from what I've heard! Not really a lot, but I've never heard of the dieting and all that before. The body shaper thing, I was told, was for 4-6 weeks. But, diff doctor diff body type.

I know someone that has it done on her face (under the chin - in the neck area). She did wear this cloth facial "mask" thing for about a 3 days day, but that was it.

I had a co-worker that had the gastric bypass surgery who later went in to have skin removed and liposuction done in the waist/hip area. oh gross! She had to wear that harness/shaper thing for about 8 weeks, in addition to dealing with tubes for drainage. From what she described, I was extremely painful...and gross.

I don't know if I could go through that. I would just have to buy a girdle and call it a day.

K I'm comin out. I got it done last Tuesday. I've never had surgery before, except for wisdom teeth and I only got numbed, not put out. That was quite the experience and it's so odd to wake up somewhere and not remember anything that happened. I'll talk a little about my experience for anyone who is thinking about doing this.

I wana start by saying I wasn't doin this as an "easy out". No matter how much weight I would have lost- 20lbs or 100lbs-, I'd always have what you all lovingly call a "FUPA". This has been the most painful week of my life. The first few days were horrible. I'm not going to talk about the drainage but I will say that not all doctors use the drainage tubes because the healing time is different. The first few days I had to wear two garments... one was like a really tight and long sports bra, and the other was like a normal girdle. HOLY CRAP. It was so tight that I thought my ribs were going to crack and cave in. I'm in only one now and it's a bigger size, so I'm a little more comfortable. I'm still bruised like hell and it's pretty gross looking. I couldn't shower for a week because the garment couldn't be removed or the surgery would have been pointless. But I coudl spongebathe which woohooo yeah that's fun. I still can't shower alone because moving is really hard. The area they took out is very tender, but most of the pain is coming from my actual stomach muscles. I can't bend over, getting dressed is really hard, and I'm not sure when I'll be able to sit in a car comfortably which means no driving. I get to take the garment off in a few weeks because I'm progressing normally.

There've been times where I've regretted getting this done because of the pain and lack of privacy and being too nauseous or "tight" to eat. (girls, if you've ever worn a girdle or corsett to an event, you'll know what I mean by being too tight to eat) I know in the end it'll be worth it, and since I've been suffering so much, there's no way I'll go back to bad eating habits and I can't WAIT to get out and start working out again.

So, if anyone is thinking about it and has any other questions, let me know. Obviously everyone is different so I can only give you the details of what I went through.

The only question that matters is this:

Do you feel better about yourself that you got this done?

Bobby makes a good point - if you feel better about yourself when all's said and done, or at least can balance the pros and cons, then I'd call it a good decision.

I've considered it, I admit it. I have some flab (with good muscle tone underneath) that I've seen a doctor about; I'm saving money toward a tummy tuck. I wouldn't mind losing a few more pounds beforehand, though, for the same reasons you mention - the tightness of the full girdle etc.

A good friend of mine had some fat taken out of her chin (she plans a face lift in a few more years), and she wore a kind of neck brace for about a week, then a chin strap for about a month or so (I forget). She said it was worth every minute, though!

Edited to avoid a double post: Did you plan this so close to Thanksgiving? If so, you're Summa Cum Laude of the "Body Refinement Club"!!!!

Lol no I have just wanted it done for so long that when my mom finally said "ok let's make the appointment" and then the doc said "ok we can take you November 15" I was like sweet! Thankfully I'll be able to eat tomorrow... in moderation which is what always should be done anyways. I just hate having it close to Christmas and my birthday. I won't be able to actually go shopping.

Right now, I don't feel that great. But I know that when the swelling is down and I can start to work out again and go about my normal life, I'll feel a lot more comfortable with myself. I'd still have 60lbs to go to reach my realistic goal, that is to be at the same weight as high school graduation. I'm just gona take my time and try to be patient.

sidenote: they say swelling can take up to 4-6 months to be completely down but right now I can tell a difference.

Wow, you are so brave! Here's wishing you luck on a speedy recovery, though...in a few months, I bet you'll be so glad you did it.
