History question

Just thought I'd throw this out there:

Is there any source that lists the locals that preceeded individual chapters of National/International GLOs?

The reason I ask is that I'm working on a book of rememberance for GLOs here at UofT - and well records are pretty good WWI on, things are a bit spotty beforehand - and I don't want to miss a single name that needs to be commemorated... and to ensure that I need to be aware of all the GLOs local and national/international.

Most of ours are listed in our history book as it goes through the discussion through the years, but no clue if there's one source.

I know (or hope) that most orgs. have some info on the locals that preceeded their chapters - I'm going to have to write each anyways I just wanted to save some time...

On that note does anyone know where records/info might be kept for GLOs whose HQ disbanded?

local history

likely the best source would be old yearbooks, and a gleaning
of them, from time to time, will give an impression of the group.
Every four or five years somebody puts in a history of sorts, not
aware that they have invented the wheel again, that is why I say to look in several....in the college library usually.
Fraternity/Sorority headquarters might have a copy of the petition
for a charter which will generally have a history of the petitioner.
But to expect the CEO, the staff/grunts to look it up, forget it.
Good luck.

Unfortunately the yearbooks for UofT only cover from about 1918 to 1960 when it comes to GLOs - before that they aren't listed at all (nor is affiliation); after that of course the university servered all ties to GLOs.

There is a memorial roster in the Soldiers Tower Memorial listing all the names of those who fought and those who died in the Great War, but GLO affiliation is spotty at best. The memorial book for World War II only lists those who gave their lives, and it doesn't mention any GLO afflilations.

As it is I've been going through the old records of the university compiling a list of students/faculty/alumni that gave their lives in the various wars of the past two centuries - problem is the further you go back the more iffy the records are...

Basically I need to figure out what locals became what international GLOs - so I know who to contact in the hopes of getting a list of names and dates to compare to the list I'm building... of course this all assumes that the various GLOs in question will co-operate and that their membership rolls aren't secret.

There is a list on our library archives, and it is available via internet. Most of the locals started in the late 1960's, around 1966 went national from 1968 to the present. It is interesting to see some of the names, i.e. Epsilon Kappa Tau, became TKE, Alpha Kappa Pi became Pi Kappa Alpha.

That is something that would be gold; but unfortunately I haven't located anything like that in UofT's libraries or it's archives.

While it's possible to ask active chapters what the local preceeding their chartering was if any... the problem comes to the more than a dozen chapters that are inactive (or whose GLO folded).

I was hoping that something like Bairds existed that had a listing of all the active and inactive chapters, with some sort of brief bio clip about each - I've seen such a list in an old Lambda Chi Alpha manual... a all-Fraternity version would be priceless.

Bairds may have some list of GLOs that went under both local and national.

Thumbs up

Rob, Older Bairds may be the ticket.

Mine go back to 1930 only though but they will keep some items in for a time.

The newer Bards really suck. Homomized as book was getting huge.

Check Librarys at schools not only at Your School but also Public and see if they have them.

Before WWI is going to be tough! (?) maybe, maybe not! Dirt digging is never easy!

Good Luck on Your Quest.

I've seen Baird's Manuals from the early 1900s. The articles on th evarious groups are much smaller and the coverage of such topics as in this thread not as wide ranging as in the later editions.

"Que Psi Phi 'til the day I die!"

True that, but if You have some of the Newest Bairds, a lot is to be desired!

Went to the 1930 and did not break out any Canadian information.

It has to be somewhere!

old school! Those look just about right with some of the info I've been finding - at least from predecessors. What sources are you using? Maybe there are other editions or something hiding around the libraries up here (the archives were emptied out when the university severed ties, so all references are now indirect). I do know a few more particulars about some of the orgs. or predecessors mentioned but I gotta say this is very valuable for my research - mainly because it helps me narrow the focus on indirect references (university yearbooks, college yearbooks, student newspapers, graduation lists, etc). Though I do have to point out when discussing dates like the above - it might be handy to include centuries for some

As for sororities I don't think it'll be needed for the memorial book (as far as the memorials record only one woman from the school was killed during the wars; but it might be wrong) - but it would be of interest to me... and I'm sure those that maintain the Canadiangreeks.com website.

RACooper......Until Tau chapter was chartered, we were known as Beta Delta Pi, an international GLO that, according to one of my sisters, "lacked organization"
