Financing Your Education

Hello all! I thought this might be a interesting topic to bring up:
How do you finance your education? Do you have scholarships, loans, grants, etc? Do your parents pay for you? Or do you pay for it on your own?

Personally, I had a scholarship given to me, my senior year in high school from the Long Beach Sororoptimists. It was a help for my books and supplies, but for tuition, my parent's fit the bill. My second year of college until now, I haven't been so lucky. I've paid my own way... Which is one of the many reasons why I have taken some time off of school, and went Alum with the sorority.

Well, today MSN had a lovely article on scholarships/loans/grants/etc, (here's the link) and I found there's a scholarship for tall people!!! Yeah, sure did have to look that one up. But unfortunately you have to be in high school to receive it! Man, I thought, "Finally, being tall will pay off! oh wait, nope, I was wrong..."

Anyways, this MSN article had some interesting information, you might wanna take a look at it and pass it on to some high schooler you know.

When I was in school (wow, it's been almost two years since I've been out!), I was pretty lucky to have scholarships. My college offered me a huge amount, my dad's company gave me money each year, and I had a few private scholarships I found my senior year in college. My parents paid the remainder, which wasn't too much. However, I knew that if I messed up and lost any scholarship, I had to personally pay the difference. And my parents said they would only pay for 4 years of college...anything extra was my expense. So, I worked hard, got good grades, and graduated within 4 years.

Before graduating high school, my friends and I looked through tons and tons of scholarship books to find scholarships for just about everything you could think of. The money is definately out there...you just have to have the patience to search and find it. When I have a family, you bet I will be sitting with my kids making them fill out scholarship applications for silly things. (Like for tall or short people ) Why pass up an oppurtunity for a free education???

I had a bit of scholarship money my first two years, but not enough to make a dent in anything...I've been on student loans. I've got about $40,000 of loans...and I still have two semesters to go.

Of course, I also worked part time during school, and fulltime during the summers (when i could find full-time).
