Numeric Keypads vs. Telephones

WHY is the order on a numeric keypad different than that on a telephone? Why? WHY???

It makes me WILD!!!!!

One summer job I had, I had to use the numeric pad semi-constantly, and do so with my left hand. I usually use my right hand to use the phone - but if I have to use the other hand, it's as if I'm using a difference alphabet or something!! ACK!!!!
