Man assaulted in front of Kappa Alpha Mizzou

(Was this the chapter that fired a cannon at the neighbors last year?)

Man assaulted in front of Kappa Alpha house
By Doug Carlucci, News Editor.__ Posted October_21,_2005.
A 20-year-old man visiting Columbia from Maryland was assaulted early Saturday morning by six men who came out of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity house at 1301 University Ave., according to the victim and a report filed by Columbia police.

Daniel Maddox said six men accosted him as he passed by the fraternity house on his way to a friend’s home. He said one man slapped him, and when he told the man to stop, he was slapped again. He said the men then started to punch him while Maddox tried to protect his face.

Maddox said he was able to walk to the driveway of a nearby house. He said that as he was standing in the driveway, another man came out of the Kappa Alpha house, knocked him over and repeatedly smashed his face into the pavement. He then lost consciousness.

Maddox said a man he did not know found him in the driveway. He said the friend he was visiting, MU senior Joe Moore, then brought him back to Moore’s apartment.

Maddox said he suffered severe injuries, including trauma to his left eye, a scar from his left temple to left eye and a concussion. He said plastic surgery would be necessary to remove the scar and that he has undergone CAT scans for the concussion.

Maddox filed a report with Columbia police on Sunday afternoon and was taken to a local hospital from the police station. Moore said Maddox filed the report only when he realized the extent of his injuries.

Maddox has since returned to Maryland.

The police report states that Maddox was walking down University Avenue when six men came out of the fraternity house and began punching him and “calling him ‘faggot.’” Maddox is not gay.

The report stated Maddox’s “injuries consisted of an extremely swollen left eye to the point where he could not open it.”

The police report stated the victim did not want to press charges. Maddox said he never declined to press charges and returned to the police station Tuesday to file them. He said he spoke with a detective for about three hours on Tuesday.

Moore said he and Maddox did not know any of the attackers.

Director of Student Life Mark Lucas said he received the police report on Wednesday morning and that his department is conducting an investigation.

Greek Life coordinator Lauren Farell said the university’s investigation is not focusing on Kappa Alpha as an organization, but on the individuals involved with the attack.

Kappa Alpha president Chip Wagner declined to comment on the incident Thursday morning.

“I have no comment right now except that I am working with the university about the situation,” Wagner stated

If the charges are true, they need to find the culprits and kicked them out of the fraternity and the school.

Unhappy

How sad and uncalled for from a Fraternity such as KA!

There seems to be a system of stupidity in place in this Chapter.
Decanonize them, find the ass wipes, prosecute them, kick them out of the Fraterity and the School.

Brotherhood is great, but they should be delt with on all levels.

I knew a guy who transfered from Mizzou and had friends in that KA chapter. He said that the KA cannon was aimed at the black student center and they made no secret of it.

And don't flame me, I don't necessarily agree with it but that's what he told me.

EDIT: So let's see if I understand this: Some random guy is walking down the street and for no reason at all six guys come out of the house and assult him. Something doesn't add up. Either the victim was with holding pertinent information about the incident or all six of the guys have overactive medula oblongatas.

The Maneater -- one of the student paqpers at Mizzsou -- reports that the president of the Kappa Alpha Order chapter was arrested, although the arrest does not seem to be directly related to the attack incident. (The arrest is related to underage drinking, reportedly.)

Excerpt:

Columbia police arrested the president of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity at about 6 p.m. Friday on suspicion of allowing a minor to drink alcohol by having an open house party.

http://www.themaneater.com/article.php?id=22453

(Incidentally, the article may strike some readers as a bit odd because it appears to refer to IFC and Panhellenic as though they govern or represent ALL fraternities and sororities at U. of Missouri. I'll bet that comes as a surprise to members of NPHC fraternities and sororities, and to other people who are well aware of the existence of the NPHC Greek-letter organizations.)

Arrest made in fraternity assault

An MU student will appear in court after Homecoming attack.

By ELIZABETH A. PHILLIPS

JEFFREY FORKAN was arrested Wednesday.

An MU sophomore was arrested Wednesday in connection with an Oct. 15 assault in front of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity house.

Jeffrey Forkan, 20, listed in the most recent edition of the university’s Greek Directory as a member of the fraternity, was arrested at the fraternity house by Columbia police Wednesday on suspicion of third-degree assault after he gave a statement to police. He was later released on his signature to appear in court, Columbia police Sgt. Ken Hammond said.

The arrest follows an attack in front of the house at 1301 University Ave. on a Maryland man visiting a friend over Homecoming weekend.

“(Forkan) admitted that he was involved in a physical altercation with this guy,” Columbia police Officer Bryan Leibhart said.

Hammond said police do not plan to make any other arrests in connection with the assault.

“He is the one we felt was responsible,” Hammond said.

Daniel Maddox, 20, of Waldorf, Md., said he was walking past the fraternity house about 3 a.m. Oct. 15 when six men surrounded him, called him a faggot and attacked him.

Minutes later, while talking to a woman who witnessed the attack, a man came from behind and repeatedly slammed Maddox’s face into the ground. Maddox said he was knocked unconscious by the blows. The woman, whose name was not released by police, reported that the attacker ran inside the Kappa Alpha Order house.

Maddox said he was happy to hear that an arrest was made but is still suffering from the injuries he sustained during the assault. He said he still has migraine headaches and will need plastic surgery for injuries on his forehead.

Any student found responsible of physical assault by MU’s Department of Student Life could face punishments ranging from a warning to an expulsion, said department director Mark Lucas. He said he had not yet heard about the arrest Thursday afternoon.

Forkan was arrested by Columbia police on suspicion of a minor in possession of alcohol and on suspicion of possessing false identification at 2:15 a.m. Oct. 16 at the fraternity house, just one day after the assault occurred.

Forkan had not responded to messages left on his voice mail as of 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Chip Wagner, president of MU’s chapter of Kappa Alpha Order, and other members of the fraternity declined to comment.

Lol I can't help but laugh. Chip Wagner? Not to make fun of the guy, but it sounds like a name straight out of Sorority Boys or Van Wilder.

Fraternity members dispute assault
By Jedd Rosche, Staff Writer.__ Posted November_01,_2005.

Daniel Maddox, the Maryland man who told Columbia police he was assaulted outside the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity house, could face his own charges of trespassing and assault.

Kappa Alpha President Chip Wagner said the fraternity plans to press charges against Maddox for trespassing. Maddox, 20, told police he was beaten by six men at 3 a.m. Oct. 15 in front of the Kappa Alpha house at 1301 University Ave.

Jeffrey Forkan, who was arrested last week in connection with the assault, said he told police Maddox had assaulted him. Forkan, 20, later was charged with third-degree assault. He also was arrested Oct. 16 on suspicion of possession of false identification and purchasing or possession of alcohol by a minor.

Forkan said Maddox, who was visiting a friend in Columbia, entered the fraternity house drunk and was forcibly removed by residents.

“We escorted him out with a reasonable amount of force,” Forkan said. “That’s when he came at us.”

Forkan said Maddox started the altercation by punching him. Forkan then pushed Maddox back, Forkan said. Forkan said Maddox stumbled on the street curb and landed on his face.

Forkan also said Maddox called Kappa Alpha members the same epithet that Maddox accused fraternity members of saying.

“We were called faggots,” Forkan said.

Maddox disputed Forkan’s account.

“My injuries could not be self-inflicted,” Maddox said. “They could not be from falling. Any person with any medical experience would say I was attacked.”

Maddox told The Maneater he suffered injuries to his left eye, a concussion and scarring from his left temple to his left eye. He said he would have to have plastic surgery to remove the scar.

Wagner challenged Maddox’s statement that he was assaulted outside the fraternity house and on a neighboring property.

“His statement is basically contradicting himself,” Wagner said. “He was in our house.”

Wagner was not present at the house that night, but said he heard of the incident the following morning from Kappa Alpha members, he said.

Both Forkan and Maddox said they were not drunk on the night of the incident. Maddox said he drank two beers.

Forkan said he told his side of the story to Columbia police after being arrested Oct. 27 in connection with the assault.

Bryan Liebhart, the Columbia police detective investigating the case, said he could not comment on evidence or other aspects of the investigation.

The university’s investigation into the incident will conclude by next week, Director of Student Life Mark Lucas said.

“By mid-next-week we should have a decision, but it won’t be shared with the media,” Lucas said.

The investigation being conducted by the Department of Student Life is relying on witness testimony, Lucas said.

“We use the details of the police reports and our own interviews with the alleged victims and the persons accused,” Lucas said. Lucas said he is investigating both Forkan and the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity.

Interfraternity Council spokesman Zach Jemas said the council would not comment until the investigation is completed. IFC is the governing body for 28 campus fraternities.
