Chapter name question?
I recently won a 1922 DG cookbook off of ebay, and under each recipe, it lists the sister's name and chapter of initation. Some of the chapter names I've noticed are Lambda Nu, Tau Zeta, Rho Sigma and Patroness Pi. I've never heard of these chapters. Has anyone else?

Maybe the name of locals that later became DG chapters? Just a random guess.

Maybe you can send in your question to the DG Historian? They might know the answer (and I would love to know what it is too!)

Carrie Hochwalt carrie@deltagamma.org is the E.O. Public Relations Coordinator/Archivist. She's always been very on top of things when I've communicated with her.

I have an old "History of Delta Gamma" that listed all DG chapters ever in existence, and none of those names are listed.
Is the cookbook from a single chapter? If so, it could be that they named their (then called) pledge classes. Thus, the member would be a initiate of that pledge class. Patroness would, of course, be an adult intiated at the time the chapter was installed. Just an idea.

I emailed Carrie at EO and she's working on it That's a good idea about the names being the names of the pledge classes, but the cookbook says it's published by the Lambda Nu chapter No matter what the chapters are in the book, I'm glad I won it- it's such a neat item!

There also used to be a high school sorority named Delta Gamma. I don't know too much about it, but maybe those were their chapter names?

It's definitely "our" Delta Gamma because it's published by George Banta Publishing Company

Bound by a Mighty Vow
If any of you have read the book Bound by a Mighty Vow, in the appendix it looks like the George Banta Publishing company published tons of sorority (not just DG) documents in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Hmmmm. I know the DG historian, and I don't think she would append a statement like that to her reply.

The mystery is solved!
From Carrie at EO:
Well, I think I have solved our mystery! I finally had a moment to do a
little research on the DG Cook Book you discovered. We actually have 2-3
copies of the same book here at EO. I looked inside and
realized/understood what you had been trying to explain to me.
The "Lambda Nu" chapter is actually the Minneapolis, MN alumnae chapter
(established in 1904). In the early years the alumnae chapters took the
Greek chapter names based on the chapters of initiation of its members.
Therefore, the founding/majority of the Minneapolis alumnae were from
Lambda-Minnesota and Nu-Idaho chapters. At the "advice" of Council most
alumnae groups changed from their Greek names to use names of the area
they lived in. It appears that Lambda Nu became Minneapolis around 1930.
