CANDLELIGHT! (finally)

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forums but I've been a lurker for some time... Anyway... I finally get a candlelight! I'm so excited. I'll tell you what school I go to after the candlelight (I don't want any of my sisters to read this and find out about it before the ceremony!).

My boyfriend, who's a Sigma Nu, lavaliered me Thursday night. He was so sweet about it, it was part of an Easter present.

I wanted to ask you guys- we haven't had a candlelight for a lavalier in a long time in our chapter.... How many times does the candle go around? I couldn't remember if it was once for a lavalier and twice for a pearling, or once for a pearling and twice for a lavalier.

Thanks so much, and I'll let you know how it goes!

Congrats on your candlelight!

I think this tradition varies a lil bit from chapter to chapter.

In my chapter it was once for a pinning(i dont think fraternity guys do this much anymore, though my dad gave his fraternity pin to my mother), twice for a lavaliere, and three times for an engagement.

I'm clueless on what you mean by "pearling."

When you let this be known to the president of your chapter so the candlelight can be planned, she should be able to tell you for sure what your individual chapter does.

Congrats! In our chapter, quite awhile ago, it was once for lavaliering, twice for pinning, and three times for engagement.

Be sure to let us know how it all goes!

And for us it was once for friendship, twice for lavalier, three times for pinning, four for engagement and then (more of a joke) was five times for "major appliances".

We had one member who moved in with her boyfriend & bought a washing machine & dryer. We thought that was pretty much like getting married!

This was what we did at Ole Miss, too. The pass always started with the chapter president.

1st time- friendship*
2nd time- lavaliere, which we called being "dropped"
3rd time- engaged
4th time- married

* Just to clarify, though, the first time around was for our forever friendship with our Theta sisters, not because you were friends with a new guy (how long do THOSE last anyway!)

I think men who are not in a fraternity give their girlfriend a pearl instead of a lavaliere, so it would still be 2 times around.

Thanks guys! You've been so helpful. I think the candlelight will be tomorrow, so I'll let you all know how it goes! Of course, then we'll have to get through the treeing for my boyfriend!

One of our seniors when I was a freshman got "pearled". Basically, it is the same as giving a lavalier but from a guy who's not in a fraternity (I think thetalady already posted that though ).

kaokite- five times for "major appliances"? That's too funny!

Thanks again, I'll post tomorrow to let ya know how it goes!

LOL aobut the 'major appliances' We did ours (Iowa State) the same way as above. I"m not familiar with the pearl concept. Guys who weren't in a house normally bought members our lavalier. Or if the member already had one (like gold), he bought the other one (silver).
We also called them candlepassing.
Congratulations SparkleTheta!

Sorry to crash, but just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS!!

It's so neat to see that schools still lavalier and pin...the last candlepassing we had (the chapter I advise), the girls didn't know how to candlepass...when I explained that 1x around is a lavalier and 2x is a pinning, they looked at me and said, "What's a lavalier?" and "What's a pinning?"

Hey guys!!! I'm so excited, I had my candlelight last night... I got a new outfit during the day (I wish I had pics so I could post them)... I wore a knee-length a-line khaki skirt with a kelly green top and white and wooden sandals... It was a beautiful ceremony... I was SOO nervous for some reason though (I don't know why but I get nervous during candlelights!). We have a pretty big chapter (I think around 180 members), so there were alot of sisters there... My roomate took pictures so if I get them developed any time soon I'll post one here.

Now that I don't have to keep myself a secret anymore, I'll let you in on the good details! I'm a senior at the University of Kentucky and a Theta, (Gamma Iota chapter). My boyfriend is also a Sigma Nu here, and their chapter is Gamma Iota too!

The Lavaliering
Lucas invited me over to his house the week before Easter for dinner (he's such a good little cook! I'm so proud of him). He also said he had an Easter present for me... So, I arrived, and we had a wonderful chicken pasta with gorgonzola cheese (yum!) and salad dinner. His roomates were so cute, they were completely oblivious to what was going on (Lucas didn't tell him, he's trying to avoid getting treed), so they were just chit chatting away and I could tell Lucas was getting annoyed they weren't leaving. After dinner, I went to Lucas' room where he had my 'Easter' present hidden, and I found an Easter basket on the bed. There were four large eggs in the basket, as well as a stuffed animal chick and some candy. He told me to open the first egg- and inside there was a note that said "Will".... The second egg said "You".... The third egg said "Forever" (oops- I almost got the order right!).... Fourth egg said "Be Mine".

Then, he told me to check under the Chick, and under the chick was another egg (aww he laid an egg!.... This egg said "psstt.... Kara, look under the grass!" So I checked under the grass, and written on the basket under the grass said "Kara look under the pillow".... Under his pillow was a stuffed bunny and around his neck was my new Sigma Nu lavalier!

I was super excited when Lucas put his lavalier around my neck! He really is the best boyfriend a girl could ask for.

So, there you have it! The whole story! Thanks guys for being so supportive!

I thought "pearling" was something significant regarding good/excellent GPA's as in 3.5 or higher.

DOes anyone else know about that?
