Another homecoming dance ruined by some dick!

It started out as a practical joke, but now 14-year-old Pioneer Middle School student James Watkins has been suspended from school and may face sexual harassment charges.

Why? Well, young Mr. Watkins and a friend thought it would be funny to appear outside the Steilacoom High School homecoming dance dressed in an inflatable penis costume. (We can just see him waving to passing cars.)

School officials didn't get the joke, and even though Watkins was not on school property at the time, he was still suspended for three days for his prank. His parents plan to fight the suspension saying that James is "a straight-A student, an athlete and a good kid who made a mistake."

A website called Spirit Halloween appears to be selling the same model used by James for only $39.95!

(Wait, fourteen? I was 14 in 9th grade! This kid is in the fall of .. what, 6th grade?? Maybe they just don't say jr. high there...?

Elementary k-5. Middle school typically consists of grades 6-8. High school 9-12. I haven't heard the term jr. high in a real long time.

This really depends on the district... I am student teaching in a "middle school" that is only grades 7 and 8... Junior high schools in some districts in Washington here tend to grades 7,8,9.

We had students dressed up in Sumo Wrestler costumes today, and leading the wave at an assembly, but no genitalia were represented...

My daughter will turn 12 this year, in 6th grade. So, in 8th grade, she will turn 14. In any case, which grades are in which school is more determined by space issues of the school district than anything else and people of my generation tend to use middle school and junior high interchangably, because we never heard of middle school til we had kids

I haven't ever figured out why they changed the name from Jr. High to middle school though. My daughter's experiences in middle school are very similar to mine in junior high (same structure, changing teachers each hour, type of electives, etc)

A K-8 principal explained to me that in the current school of thought (no pun intended!) -- keeping kids in the elementary setting through grade 8 helps their behavior and test scores -- as well as the transition to high school.

Junior high and middle school have the same curriculum-- apples to apples. "Middle" sounds less threatening than "junior high." Somewhere along the way, new junior high schools were called middle schools... and the older junior highs kept the name.

Wow. We had elementary schools (K-4), middle schools (5-6), Junior high (7-8) and high school (9-12).

In our district, it helped us know a lot of the kids. Because the lines for the different schools were drawn differently, it was very easy for two kids to go to the same elem school, different middle and jr highs, then the same high school. It was interesting.

I have NO idea how it would have affected test scores. All I know is that I turned out alright.

Generally middle schools are grades 6-8, junior highs 7-9 (or 6-9). They aren't usually the same thing.

If you have an early birthday, it wouldn't be unheard of to be 14 in grade 8 by now.

These things can vary from district to district in the same metro area.

Our system is elementary = K-5, Middle School + 6-8, High School = 9-12.

When I was growing up, elementary = K-6, Junior High = 7-9, High School = 9-12.

Yes at 14, we did much more in our schools. Of course it progressively got worse and worse. I blame that on Bill Clinton being in office at the time since he set a bad example for proper sexual behavior.

In college we drank and I blame George Bush for that one.
