Anyway

I have some questions about Greek housing. How many people (or sororities) have their own housing? Our chapter is interested in getting a house, but we are unsure where to start. Of course it would be best to have one donated since we don't have any greek housing on campus.
Also, believe it or not, there is an actual law in Wisconsin that 5 or more ladies cannot live in a house together because it is considered a braffel. Can you believe it? We are not actually concerned with that because we know it is discriminatory.

I'm sorry that I can't be of much help regarding your sorority getting a house, but the good news is that the idea that more than a certain number of women living together being called a brothel is an urban legend. Check this out:

http://snopes.com/college/halls/brothel.htm

Best of luck with your housing search!

Wisconsin Sorority Houses

Hi KillarneyRose

I go to school at Marquette and we have houses. Of course, it took the four national sororities a long time to actually get a house, but that was due to Marquette attempting to not favor one sorority over the other, so we all had to have a housing contract in order before they allowed us in. Of course, the fraternities on campus can have whatever house they want......(but that's beside the point). As far as I know, there is no rule about brothels, that's seriously outdated and if anyone uses that excuse on you, do some research and I'm sure you can throw it back in their faces that they're not making any sense. Hope this helps (I doubt it will... but still )

Mary

Like it's been said, that's not a law in Wisconsin - trust me. Look at the sorority houses at UW-Madison, not to mention LaCrosse, Platteville, Marquette, Oshkosh...I know the Gamma Phi house at Madison has over 30 girls living in, my Gamma Phi house holds 8, and AXOMarq can tell you more about Marquette, but those condos (which are so cute!) hold more than 5 for sure. I believe you go to UWM - I know Gamma Phi there is unhoused because of the housing costs around campus. You might want to have several sisters rent a house together for a while and have that be your unofficial home.

Since I come from quite a small campus, we don't have houses because we don't really have the facilities to have one.

And about the law of the brothel...wow that is pretty interesting. I never knew that. I wonder if there is a history behind its origination.

THE BROTHEL LAW IS NOT TRUE.

It's listed on Snopes and there have been several discussions about it on here. It's often used as an excuse to prevent sororities from having houses. Usually if they don't have a house it's because of the situation like AXOMarq described where the school wants to make sure everyone has a comparable house.

My UW-Madison sorority house holds 45-50 girls . . . so there's definitely no Wisconsin law about more than five girls equalling a brothel.

Cool

Tell them to screw off!

Brothel Laws are as archiac as spitting on the side walk or curb you car!

Now, one thing to remember, can you afford a house?

We are demolotion of our House this weekend.

First time in 38 years since I started the Local In 1965 that we do not have a house!

Hell, have no place to go meet with the Guys! Focale Point!

OKAY, why not rent a House with 5-6 girls living in it! A Room to meet in, living room? Have parlor fees to cover costs for all and have gatherings in?

Many ways to do it, just got to ask!

*BUMP*

Just heard this one from the campus I advise at. An RA said it during a staff meeting. Love how some woman who is paid $5.15 an hour is somehow an expert on zoning and housing issues. The worst part is that the school accepted what she said as gospel.

I had a good time forwarding the comments to the Dean and the phone number to the chapter's legal counsel, who just happens to be one of the leading property and land atty's in the city.

I do love makign people look stupid.
