Sigma Nu & Sig Tau

Our history book makes some vague allusions to a Sigma Nu having a little to do with helping to found your original chapter. I was wondering if that was true and what his role was?

More info:

Our member that supposedly helped the first chapter of Sig Tau to form did so in some sort of advisory role from what I recall from our book.

Sounds vaguely familiar. I'll have to find my history stuff at home and see if that's it.

I just moved, so you may have to give me a couple days

Its actually a great question because of the military background in both fraternities. I go to OU where our Sig Tau chapter was shut down. One of my good friends who is a sig nu invited me to one of their parties and I was treated with a lot of respect. I had an old date party shirt on (from UCO Beta Zeta chapter) and one of their members asked if we where somehow linked in some way because he remembered reading about it. Anyway, hope to hear from you soon.

Here is all we have in our history section regarding Sig Tau:

"As an aside, it should be noted that Brother Wilson C. Morris (Beta Iota, Mt. Union) is given credit by Sigma Tau Gamma men's fraternity as being the driving source behind its founding..."

That's all I have. Could anyone elaborate?

Whats up Bosley. Seems to be a good number of UCO greeks here.

I actually don't think that the reference of Dr. Wilson C. Morris being a Sigma Nu is in The Chain of Honor, which is Sigma Tau Gamma's "New Member" book. The only place I have ever read that Dr. Morris was a member of Sigma Nu was in a biography of him, published by our Fraternity, that all the Executive Vice Presidents who went to Presidents Leadership Academy received. I don't remember the name of that book, and it is now packed away somewhere since I moved.

In the biography it has a detailed history and background information on many of the founding fathers. It talks about how when the Founders came back from WWI there were only literary groups. They wanted to establish a social fraternity to continue the friendships they had made while away. With the help of Dr. Morris, who was a highly regarded professor Central Missouri College, the founders were able to convince the College that the new fraternity would be a benefit to the campus.

The most interesting thing that I remember from that book was finding out that the founders were so old. There were quite a few that were in their 30's and at least one from what I remember was even married.

Fascinating stuff. Yeah, your Beta Zeta (UCO) chapter is one of the oldest at UCO. Probably because Sigma Tau Gamma seemed to be predisposed to teacher's colleges back in the early days and that's what UCO was.

They've initiated a ton of guys and lasted through some very hard times. Since we came to campus, they have always treated us with respect which is something I can't say about everyone. In fact, they're the kind of group that randomly stops by to play volleyball w/us, etc. They're a very good house.

I currently work with a Sigma Nu chapter at Eastern Illinios Univ, and they brought me to this attention on the Sigma Nu website about Sig Tau. I am a brother of Sig Tau from the Alpha Theta Chapter at Eastern Michigan University.

"Beta Iota at Mount Union was chartered by Walter James Sears in 1892. Three years later Beta Iota initiated Albert Hughes Wilson, to whom Sigma Nu owes a great debt. "Bert" Wilson served as Regent, but his most noteworthy achievement was in expansion. Wilson established more chapters than any other member of the Fraternity, thirty-two in all, and he is generally credited with helping develop Sigma Nu into a geographically representative organization. Brother Wilson was the exemplar of interfraternity spirit as well, being chiefly responsible for the founding of Alpha Sigma Phi men's fraternity. As an aside, it should be noted that Brother Wilson C. Morris (Beta Iota, Mt. Union) is given credit by Sigma Tau Gamma men's fraternity as being the driving force behind its founding while the collegiate Brothers of Delta Theta Chapter, Lombard (Knox) College assisted greatly with the founding of Alpha Xi Delta women's fraternity.
