Update on Rita!
We're ok! My friend Lauren has lived in Houston her entire life and knows country back roads amazingly well! It took her father 6 hours to make what is normally a 45 minute drive home from work the other night!
We made it in under one hour.
At one point we passed under the freeway... it was lit up like the Las Vegas skyline! Cars stretched as far each way as the eye could see.
Along the backroads, there were few delays. The closer we got to civilization, the more cars on the road. At one street there was a brief pause... as we got closer we saw that it was the neighbors standing on the side of the road handing cups of water and lemonade out to the drivers!
Houston is full of truly incredible people!
Spent a few days in Tomball. My puppy played with lots of dogs, cats, horses and even a little lamb. I am dreading taking her back to our little apartment after all this time she has gotten to spend outdoors!
Today we stood in line for a little bit of petroleum that was available. Everyone was rationed to $20 per car... not very much considering the high price of gas these days! They're trying to dole it out evenly... the next supply trucks won't make it back through here until Tue.
Tonight, I'm back in Spring Branch as we lost power in Tomball this morning.... the power is back on here. I still haven't gone back to my apartment to see how everything is.
Hope everyone is well. Thank you for your prayers and well wishes! The mayor is asking that non-essential workers stay home early this week so the city can come back on-line. A lot of neighborhoods have lost power. The schools are closed (the kids are thrilled!) and Lauren and I are keeping our fingers crossed that when we check our office emergency hotline tomorrow we might have another day or two off. We're exhausted from all the stress! I would say we're all very lucky that the storm slowed and that the loss has been minimal. There are some trees down around here, but in all.... we're ok!
