Weird radio edits of songs

"Get Low" Lil John

There are many, many, many changes from the dirty version to the clean one, but the one that I just don't understand is this one:

"awww skeet skeet m*therf*cker" becomes "awww skeet skeet skeet skeet skeet skeet"

HOW IS THAT MORE APPROPRIATE?

"Addicted" Simple Plan

The unedited version goes "I'm addic, I'm addicted to you" (or if you prefer, "I'm a dick, I'm addicted to you"). The pop radio station here omits the "I'm a dick" part. Overkill much? That's one of those edits that just draws attention to itself.

And now for my current favorite.

"Grind on Me" Pretty Ricky

The local hip-hop station plays "Grind on Me." The local pop station plays "Grind WITH Me." Where exactly is the difference here?

Okay, so I'm probably overthinking this, but these really drive me insane. Have there been any other really weird lyrics in songs that were edited for radio lately?

The one I cannot stand right now is Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl". I feel that song is a prime example of songs that should not be played on radio if the language has to be edited. It sounds weird and incomplete. I used to love that song cause of the album version, now I cannot stand it thanks to radio.

The song by Black Eyed Peas-- Don't Phunk with my Heart--Is edited on some radio stations to Don't Mess with my Heart. I don't really get it. I mean maybe Phunk sounds like something else, but it's not. Oh well.

They don't do that edit here in Boston, although I'm convinced they edit more here than they do in most other parts of the country

The simple solution is not to listen to the radio. Most of the time, my 20gb ipod on random replaces it already. No commercials, too

Well if you are listening passed 10 oclock, according to IFC Rules, lyrics dont have to be edited at all, but the DJ still has to censor his language. Secondly, Im a DJ. The company sends out the radio edits to the radio. Sometimes the radio edit on the single is different from the CD, but usually its the same across the country. Now, there are some station that are uber strict and out like, we cant say 'dick,' but most dont care.

YES. I heard "Don't Phunk with My Heart" at the bars tonight and it reminded me that the radio version is screwed up. Why? I don't get it. Okay, if they were actually saying "Don't f*ck with my heart" that would be one thing -- but they're not!

"Hollaback Girl" -- I swear that song has at least three different edited versions, and I have heard them all. On the same station. Regardless of time of day.

If I recall correctly, our local pop station got cited for violating decency standards (for something really stupid) in the past year or so, so maybe they're playing it REALLY safe -- but even so.

SO DOES MY BOYFRIEND! LOL!!!

I love Pretty Ricky, they do a very interesting show. They are like NSYNC when NSYNC was good (around '98-'00) with the matching outfits and a strong dance routine. I was shocked to see some brothas actually rapping AND dancing. It's really unique. SHOWSTOPPING!

Well...our radio here plays the song "Wait (the Whisper Song)" by the Ying Yang Twins just like the music video is.

The song should say "Ay b!tch, wait til you see my dick...i'mma beat that p***y up", but our radio (plus the music video) says "hey girl, wait til I show you this...you will never get enough." When the song first came out all they dick was bleep out b!tch, dick and p****y...now they completely changed the chorus!!

The worst was with the Black Eyed Peas Let's get retarded. What we can't say the word "retarded" so we had to change it to Let's get it started. For the longest time no one believed me when I said the song was called "Let's get retarded." I had to show them the album cover where it says it!! UGH

We seem to leave in the first parts of swear words so you at least know what the word is.
That's how it is in Seattle, too, so when I go back to college in TX, I can't deal with pop or rock stations at all. "FOR THE LOVE OF MY SANITY, I KNOW WHAT WORD THEY'RE SAYING, SO STOP EDITING EVERYTHING OUT!" I really wish stations and the FCC would figure out that listeners aren't morons, and we're going to sing the real words out in the car at the top of our lungs, anyway, LOL. Part of the word is a better way to go!

Eh, "Hollaback Girl" isn't even that much of a song. It's more of a potty-mouthed cheer, edited to death. Huge co-sign on "radio's killed that song!"

What really frustrates me are all the edits out on MTV of drug references. Some songs are all about the drugs, soooo...what the heck? Especially Weezer songs like "Hash Pipe." I think they didn't even acknowledge that it had a title for a long time.

One of my friends thinks that the obnoxiously-bleeped radio edit of "American Idiot" is a better statement than the one without the loud beeps in the middle--sort of an "oh, my virgin ears!" thing.

LOL, I like "Let's Get Retarded," while I hate how "Let's Get It Started" is overused in sports. I mean, without that radio edit, they wouldn't be abusing it to death at every sports event a la "Who Let the Dogs Out" or "Macarena." Stupid editing. Grrrr.

ETA: I just remembered an edited version that one of my friends downloaded of "She F-ing Hates Me" where "f-ing" is replaced by something that sounds like "fleeble." We even made up our own sorority around this called Kappa Kappa Fleeble at the beginning of freshman year, LOL. What the heck is a fleeble?!

A new low: I never knew this, but apparently a bunch of stations edited the word "white" out of Kanye's "All Falls Down" and now "Gold Digger."

Also, I was rocking out to Wheatus's "Teenage Dirtbag" a couple days ago and they edited the word "gun" out of "he brings a gun to school." I know for a fact that they did not do that on the same radio station when the song was first released. How things change . . .

Don't Phunk With My Heart isn't changed, although our local radio station playlist has the title listed as "Don't Mess With My Heart". I choked when I saw that...I was like "phunk is a swear word now?!"

Hollaback Girl we get the "it's my sh-" while the US edit seems to be "it's my - ".

As far as I can remember the word ass seems be left in songs.

Why are we so "liberal" up here anyway?
