anaballerina's fall 05 rush experience

Hey alll...

Recruitment (starts Aug 29) is getting so close, I can't wait!!!

The school I'm going to is in Florida and has the following groups.

arabesque
pique
tendu
jete

As far as preparations go, I'm all registered and have all my outfits set. I'm still working on shoes, but have some pretty ones to work with, so I should be set.

The only thing that is bumming me a little is that I have a small time conflict on two days of recruitment. I really couldn't avoid it (class). Would it be too inappropriate to ask to be excused from class a little early? I heard one class usually gets out early, but I don't know about the other one.

Looking forward to sharing this totally amazing experience with you all and really hoping for the best possible end-result.

some professors seems to have a bias against greeks, so if possible, try to find out from someone how that particular professor feels about sororities. be sure to let the panhellenic office know ahead of time that you have a scheduling conflict with a class.

Hey good luck! You should be excused from rush if you have a class conflict as long as you let panhel know, but I don't suppose it would hurt to ask the prof if you could go a bit early.

find a friend who can cover for you on the notes during the classtime is always a thought.

I went ahead and contacted panhel. They have my schedule, so that should help with getting excused.

It already seems that my history prof is going to be a major stickler for attendance so I will probably not push that issue, but I will try with my ed. professor.

I HATE recruitment during school. When I was in we "rushed" the week before school started and bid day was the day before school.

Any way that was then and this is now. I can't imagine a sorority or panhellenic organization that would penalize (sp?) you for "GOING TO CLASS." This is the first year for (the school I graduated from) UNA to have formal recruitment to the a week after school starts. And, about 5 of our sisters are in class for the 1st night. That is just how it is. See if you can be at later parties.

I honestly don't know of a school north of the Mason-Dixon line that doesn't have Recruitment during school!! Let me tell you, it separates the women from the girls!! And, it was our main motivation to get Quota - then, you didn't have to COB the rest of the term!

anaballerina, it's good that you already noticed that your history professor may be "greek-unfriendly" and were able to get your schedule arranged to fit Recruitment. All the best!

That is true. I mean if you can manouver classes and formal recruitment and succeed then you have accomplished something.

Ditto this. When I went to Illinois, rush was before school. Now is has been moved into September. I thought it was easier on both sides. I can't imagine keeping my mind on school during the emotional surge of rush. - especially when we're talking about 19-20 NPC groups participating in Fall formal rush. How could a person possibly concentrate on academics during that?

Here at UTEP rush is during school...and last year they had some events during school time. You are only allowed to miss 2 events, and so most peopel missed that event (a BBQ w/frats). Other than that, most of the rest of the rush events were at night.

Just a side note: ADPi Conniebama----in the greek alphabet, Kappa goes before Lambda.

a little stressed....

Hey GC.....

Thanks for all your help regarding attendance! It definitely helped me to make the right decision (class first...then recruitment parties)

Recruitment is still set the the date as planned, but this past weekend I went to a meet and greet. I'm back here cos I'm in major need of venting.

The girls were really sweet and pleasant. I enjoyed meeting them and am looking forward to rush. The positives were definitely meeting two especially great chapters that I already know would be a privilege to join! One of the other groups was equally sweet, but recruitment will be a better indicator. The last meet was really frustrating cos I messed up big time!! I had met one sister when I just arrived, but I met so many people that by the time I went to talk with her group (she was there), I introduced myself as if I'd never met her. She seemed uncomfortable by this, and I'm not sure her fellow sisters appreciated my faux paux. I felt horrible and apologized. I genuinely got a little overwhelmed with all the new faces, but I definitely messed up.

My other concern was that I was outwardly confident, but inside I felt insecure. I was constantly worrying about how I sounded and how I looked. (Everything seemed fine, but my confidence was a bit low).

Overall the whole experience was stressful. I wanted it to be the best experience possible, but I wasn't sure of myself and was a little overwhelmed by meeting so many new faces. I now am kinda shaky thinking about recruitment. I don't know how much tonight will impact my chances, and now I have the added pressure of gaining greater confidence in time for next week.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

OK IMHO

I doubt that the sorority girl will hold it against you that you forgot her name or temporarily forgot meeting her earlier. I mean they know that you are meeting a ton of girls. I am sure that you will be meeting her again and you can talk to her again soon.

So, I say don't loose any sleep over that.

Don't be upset! At my school, they had a meet and greet session and there were so few sorority members to go around, that I started talking to girls that had no one else to talk to because they went to my old high school. Then they asked me if I was recruiting for a sorority! I was sooo embarrassed! I just wanted to make sure they didn't feel out of place since no one else was really talking to them. So my meet and greet was really akward for me too. Also, the sorority members in my particular group didn't leave me with such a great impression because of the subjects they were discussing, so I felt soooo out of place. But honestly, you have to just give it more time. You will feel better the further along you get (at least I hope you will! ) For me it most certainly has!

Sweetie I wouldn't worry about the faux-paus. It was an accident. They are meeting a tons of girls just as y'all are meeting a ton of actives.

Good Luck!!!! Hope you have a wonderful time!!!!!

[mini hijack] At U of A rush would be going on now (since school starts tomorrow). If the schedule is still the same (and I honestly don't know because my chapter of intiation closed in May there), set 1 is 2 days and it would have been Thurs and Fri. Set 2 is on Sat. Set 3 (skit day or panhell day, not sure if they have moved to 'no frills' yet) on Sun. Pref on Monday (first day of school) and bid day on Tuesday. U of A has houses so I think that is one reason it is done prior to school starting b/c of traveling time.

Now at ASU. Rush is always during labor day weekend. Set 1 is a meet and greet at the dorms and I think they cut strictly on GPA (because the whole house isn't present I believe, just a couple of sisters). Set 1 is like Friday night. Set 2 is Saturday all day. Set 3 is Sunday all day. Pref is Monday and bid day is Tuesday. No houses at ASU. Set one, like I said, is at the Sorority dorm. Set 2 through Pref are at the MU. The girls rush upstairs, then the PNM's go downstairs and there is only like a 10 to at most 15 minute break. I know it's not long. They have enough time to do their thing and get ready for the next group.

anyone from ASU or U of A feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I'm totally going off memory.

[end mini hijack]
