C. Delores Tucker has died

C. Delores Tucker, 78, a political and social activist who waged a fiery national campaign against obscenities in rap music, died Oct. 12 at Suburban Woods Health and Rehabilitation Center in Norristown, Pa. She had a heart ailment and lung condition.

Mrs. Tucker, who once was the highest-ranking African American woman in Pennsylvania state government, focused a spotlight on rap music in 1993, calling it "pornographic fifth" and saying it was demeaning and offensive to black women. "You can't listen to all that language and filth without it affecting you," she said.

I hadn't heard. Many didn't agree with her stance during the late 80s, but she was truly rare.

Very sad. I never knew that she was an AKA.

Rest in peace, Mrs. Tucker, for a life well lived taking stances against injustice and negative lyrics.

Mrs Tucker was truly a driving force in my hometown of Philly and beyond. Her zeal and dedication will sorely be missed.

As someone who grew up during the Hip-Hop Revolution, I did not care for Ms. Tucker and her tactics. As an adult I now realize the validity of what she was trying to do. She is as much apart of the history of hip-hop as is Pac and Biggie! I just wish during that time both sides could have been more open to listening to one another.

May she Rest in Peace!

N4L, you really took the words right out of my mouth. I am part of today's "hip hop generation", so there is only so much I remember about Soror C. Delores Tuckers' work to combat negative lyrics in Hip Hop.

I will not get into her politics, but I do admire how much she stood up for what she believed in; campaigning for something that is much greater than a few curse words - the respect she believed the Black race was not getting as a result of our place in rap and much more.

Nelson George's Hip Hop America does a good job of discussing Soror Tucker's work.

I pray that she may rest in peace.
