Second woman in a row appointed Canada's Governor General

Official announcement to be made tomorrow. Ms. Jean is also the second television personality appointed in a row. She is the third woman to hold this post. The governor general is Canada's Head of State and represents the Queen when she is not in Canada.

Michaelle Jean is Canada's next Governor-General (from CBC)

My guess is that they are seen as a politically safe choice; someone who is not beholden to any particular party's platform - in other word's a "fluff" or figurehead appointment. Personally I'd like to see more forceful characters appointed - a return to the likes of Vanier or Massey.

In the same respect they are also well versed in the politics of the country and of current affairs without any obvious bias. She is really the ideal candidate for the times, with the re-emergence sepratist notions in Quebec. I personally think it is a solid choice, far better than some of the other options the media had been proposing prior to the announcement. Anyways the GG should only be a figurehead nowadays, the crown should remain at arms length. Let the Government run the country and the GG act on it's whims.

I heard the other propsals and was suprised to hear them, because I was always taught that GGs alternated between English-speaking and French-speaking.

I think we should all get jobs at the CBC so we can get cushy government jobs with big perks later! It sure worked for Carole Taylor (BC politics).
http://www.legis.gov.bc.ca/mla/38thParl/taylor.htm

She was with CBC (served as Chair of CBC/Radio-Canada from 2001-2005. She is well-known for her media career which included hosting W5, Canada AM and Pacific Report) and now, even though she is a rookie politician, she has the fat cat job of being BC Minister of Finance. Nice work, if you can get it, except that bring Finance Minister...everyone will eventually hate you.

In any case, it would appear that CBC is the way to go if you want the cushy lifestyle later on.

But I would rather be GG, since Rideau Hall is so pretty and you get to live there for free. And apparently being GG is not that big of a responsibility..you just show up and look pretty and do appearances, kinda like Miss America but no tiara .

Well, considering that Paul might be looking at some tough issues and problems in the fall, he might be thinking it would be helpful to at least have the support of Quebec ...

(Oh, on a completely different vein, I am moving back out west to my hometown of Calgary at the end of August .... back to land of oil, guns, and Ralph!!!)

Hey Sigrid - want to move back now?

See, I said this to Mistermadly last night, and he got mad at me. I guess it sounds better coming from an actual Canadian.

My parents and I think the next GG should be Ian Hanomansing.
