GC Martial Artists
Just curious if any of you study or teach the martial arts? If so, would love to discuss them here.
Can you tell us which martial art(s) you're studying/teaching, what rank you've achieved, if you compete, how long you've been involved, and why you started.

My older sisters were all heavily involved in Judo. I got my training there, defending my ass from them.....

Rio:
Are they still taking judo? Did they go to tournaments?
I've been involved in judo for many years.... it's become a part of me. I teach judo on the side, and give free self defense seminars to the public. It's my way of giving back to the art and to the community.
I've also taught a course in college in self-defense for police and correction officers.

I took Tang Soo Do for 6 years. Its a Korean form of Martial Arts. I eventually achieved a 2nd degree blackbelt by the time I was 17. I was actually in the palm beach newspaper a few times for beating other people's asses. I was disqualified a number of times for loosing my temper and just all out fighting after getting jibted on a few fights. One time in particular I threw my gloves off and just started punching and beating the crap out of a guy 2 levels higher than me. I still won 3rd place that fight but was not allowed to compete after that tantrem for the remainder of the tournament.
Here is the website if you want to know anything about it. It was first formed in ZTAngel's hometown here in North America.

They "quit" right before they headed off to college. They were Champs back in the day for Ohio. Since 2 of them are twins the last "championship" match was always them fighting eachother...

I've done both Tang Soo Do and Olympic Tae Kwon Do, but I want to try Kung Fu, I just need to find a good place to learn.
I did TSD as a kid, until I was about 13 and TKD for 1.5 years as an adult. I did it as a kid because it was fun, and same as an adult. I did competitions and even won a bronze medal at nationals when I was but a wee girl.

I use to love going to those tournaments and fighting. But I think one of my favorites was when you had to break those pine boards alogn with doing your forms to move up. I have sooo many trophies from those days at my mom and dad's house.

LOL! Well, we can't catch a bullet in our teeth, but it really DOES work. In fact, I feel judo is probably the best form of self defense for a woman because we throw, pin, do arm bars, and learn to choke.
When a man attacks a woman, he usually doesn't kick or punch her.. he wrestles her to the ground. PERFECT! Because in judo we grab and throw! And, if a guy gets a woman who knows judo on the ground, she will know how to get out of a pin, and she can break his arm, or choke him unconscious too!
For men, I would say that judo is excellent for a bar-room brawl situation.. however, it's handy to know how to block some punches (which you would learn in the striking arts like karate and tae kwon do).
And. any form of martial arts will give you tremendous self confidence. There is usually a "testing phase" when an attacker is looking for a victim. If your response is anger rather than fear, he'll probably go on to choose a different victim. The martial arts gives you a "don't mess with me" confidence.
Ideally, you should study both the striking and grappling arts. I've studied judo, karate, and tkd.... although judo is what I've got my black belt in.
