Consignment Shops?

Has anyone ever sold anything through a consignment shop? How big of a cut did the shop owner take? Was it an overall positive experience?

I have taken kids clothes into a resale store. The owner went through the items I brought in and decided what she wanted. She took 2 old navy shopping bags (the big paper handled kind) full of baby clothes and I left the store with what she didn't want and about $120 in cash.
I am not sure how much she resold the items for, but I was pleased with the outcome.
For the $120 she got lots of little jean, shirts-- winter type clothing--all baby gap type clothing, and some old navy too.

The shop where I take my things decides what it wants, and then tries to sell it. If they sell it, I get a percentage of whatever they sold it for (don't the the exact percentage, though). If they don't sell it, I get it back.

Check out a couple of shops before you decide on which one to try and sell your clothes through. Some places will try to rip you off and others will hardly even try to sell your clothes.

I sold a bunch of stuff one time, and I think I got 45%, they got 55%, something like that. If it doesn't sell in a certain amount of time, they will give it to Goodwill or some place like that.

Yup. The place wants stuff pressed and on hangers. They go thru them and see what they think will sell. They get 55 or 60%

You can either get the rejects back or have them donated. The place where I go donates the clothes to the local battered women's shelter

Sounds like things are pretty standard across the board. The shop I take my things to now does a 50/50 split with you if on clothes. If the price is over $200.00 then it's a 60/40 split to you getting 60. Clothing that hasn't sold and not picked up by you will be donated.

Ask if they have a flier that lists what their rules are about what they'll take and when. Try to get an appointment as soon as possible.

I agree with Katie that you should check around to see which stores move their merchandise quicker.
