U. of Colorado Sororities Planning for Fall COB, etc.

NPC sororities at the U. of Colorado will be recruiting non-freshman women in fall 2005, according to a recent article (excerpts below). The IFC fraternities, as a different thread points out, will be rushing freshmen in the fall.

Two women from the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) joined CU-Boulder's sorority governing body, the Panhellenic Association (PHA), Tuesday to discuss alternative methods of recruiting during the fall semester.

Betty Quick, NPC secretary, and Barb Probst, Colorado's NPC area advisor, spoke . . . about how to informally recruit non-first-year women through means of continuous open biding, also referred to as COB.

"We're here for a support system for them (sororities), to let them know that they have resources they can call or contact," said Probst.

Last spring sororities agreed to defer recruitment to the spring semester in order to keep university relations. Chapters began to worry about financial strain as a result of recruiting in the spring.

Therefore, the NPC has assisted sororities in finding alternatives to meet membership numbers before spring recruitment.

. . . Beginning Sept. 5 all sorority chapters can informally ask non-freshmen to become a chapter member.

Together the PHA and NPC are brainstorming ideas to make continuous open biding successful in order to help each chapter meet certain membership numbers prior to formal recruitment of freshmen in the spring.

Currently the PHA is also working on its public relations in order to reach more women off campus through flyers and mass e-mails. . . .

"Our huge goal is to have a successful recruitment, and to come out stronger than when we began, if possible," said Katie Matthews, PHA president.

Why Worry About Un Colorado, they are toatally screwddddd up from top to bottom and I aint talking about THE GREEK System which is because of the UN Colorado System!

Whipping Groups of course. Greeks are Bad, it is all their fault!

WOW, an very unimpressive ADM!

For Those that have not been near The Campus, Mountains to The West, and Plaines to The East!

It is really nice as a college setting as You will find!

I like the idea of recruiting non-freshmen during fall COR. I know a few schools here in Ohio do it. I'd like to see it done more at competitive schools where there is little room for upperclassmen in formal recruitment.

I can see both sides of the coin.

I can see why they like recruiting freshman because they are thinking "four years of college, prime them for alumnae membership". The problem is is that only a quarter of collegians actually continue to remain involved once they graduate.

But on the other side I think you can still push that a sorority is for a lifetime with a sophomore/junior and even senior. And the older the sister is the more willing they might be for alumnae membership.

If I'm making sense at all.

When I was initiated, one of the girls in my Alpha class was actually a Junior. So it can be done.

I think sororities just need to edge away from "freshman are the best". They need to look at the girl, if she is a good fit with the chapter and sorority as a whole and not look at her age/"grade".
