Um, did you miss the whole "Flyers buy out LeClair and Amonte" bit? Or the other teams putting aging players with 'star' contracts on the waiver wire?

The CBA's salary cap will cause many of these casualties, just like in football . . .welcome to the reality of a 'hard' cap. It happens.

Detroit was way over the salary cap, and someone had to go.

As KSigRC said, welcome to the salary cap. Unless you're the Bruins, you're in for a tough process.

I guess it pays to be a Blackhawks fan, we are NOWHERE near being over the cap. Expect to see many more "big" name players going....

Um no actually I was just concentrating on Detroit and how sad I am to see quite possibly the most popular player in recent Wings' years to go. I could care less about any other city or even hockey. It's sad that someone who had done SO MUCH for Hockeytown could be playing for another team now.

I hear you - really though, it's still a business, and that part can really suck, especially since it's been lost in the shuffle in some hockey cities (especially Detroit, New York, Toronto, LA).

There will be many, many more tough decisions to come - honestly, I think you might see a 'quiet retirement' from Stevie Y soon, his contract is way out of line with his performance IIRC . . .

This is going to affect the Wings more than anybody else, since they were above the cap and (reportedly) one of two teams that actually made money. But, some of these guys just want to play hockey and would probably take a lesser contract just to play. Yzerman was planning on retiring after last season (the season that didn't happen), but I think he'll come back this year, taking less money. Chellios said on the radio today he just wants to play hockey, it doesn't matter to him how much he makes. This was shown during the lockout by him playing for a minor league team (whose name is escaping me). It's going to be a sad year for Hockeytown. McCarty was awesome, on and off the ice. And we won't get a chance to say goodbye
