Yet another question for y'all
Hey all! How are ya guys? lol
Ok, well as some of you might know I'm thinking of rushing this Fall. I've rushed Fall of '04, but there were unforseen circumstances---my mom was hospitalized and there were huge medical bills--and so I decided to forgo my first choice and pick the one that was easiest on the budget. BIG MISTAKE!!
So I decided to go back, rush and pick my first choice. During the summer the idea of going out of town for college started to nip at me. There was one specific college that I had in mind...and it wasn't too terrible on the budget either. Unfortunately, a few days ago my mom told me that it was just slightly out of our reach for this year...but for next year i would for sure be able to go.
Now this is my dilemma....if y'all were in my situation would you guys still rush this fall or wait? My school only has 2 NPC sororities, and the school that I want to transfer to has MUCH more. There is also the fact that i'll be a junior when i transfer schools...granted i'll be in school much longer since I decided to switch majors (and yes..i've decided which major to switch to). I also don't know how competitive the other school is. I just don't want to wait to go greek becuase i'm scared that i might graduate without ever joining. BUT i also don't want to join a sorority here...then transfer and be apart of that other chapter and not "click" with the other girls. So what would y'all do?

Are the sororities at your current school at the school you plan on transferring to?
ETA: Rather, is the sorority you didn't rush last time at the new school?

I'd say go for it this year if you like the orgs on your campus. Even if they don't have chapters on the campus you want to transfer to, you are a member for life and can be involved as an alumna should you get a bid. Also, things can change in a year and you may decide not to transfer.
I think you know from reading on here that depending on the school, it can be difficult to get a bid as an upperclassman.

I think this is excellent advice. I know girls in my chapter too who were unsure about staying at NP, but they joined the org and that is what decided them on staying where I went to undergrad.

I joined Gamma Phi before transferring. I don't know that I would make the same decision again - I'm definitely glad I'm a Gamma Phi, but it's very lonely seeing Greeks at your new school who look at you funny for wearing other letters and not being involved in an organization at the level you were at your old school.

I waited to join as a junior, don't use that as reason to go now.
My opinion: each sorority at each school is different. If you really like the girls from one at your current school, rush them. Realize you aren't going to spend the next two years of your life going to school with them and will not receive little sisters etc. But if you transfer to a school w/out your soroity, you could try to start up a colony. If they have one already tho, you may find they are nothing like the girls you loved and decided to join at your 1st school. Also, large school greek systems and systems with more NPC groups are very different than small ones or ones with only 2 NPC groups, so take that into account. I joined DZ at a small school where my chapter had 6 sisters. I loved it and loved the smallness, I got to know all of them and they werent partiers so I fit in really well. Now I am going to grad school at another state school, but one with a bigger greek community where there is at least 4 more sororities and my sorority is in the 60+ range and way out of control with partying etc.
Benefit of waiting: more options, you may like the girls in a different sorority better, more time to be active, etc.
Good luck

Rush now at your current campus, enjoy it and if you get a bid from the chapter you feel most compatible with, then join. Don't spend all your time worrying about where you'll be a year from today. Take time to enjoy the NOW.

The sorority I rushed was NOT an NPC sorority, so there really is no problem there. But to answer your question... yes both NPC sororities at my current school are at the school i plan on transferring to.
Thank you all for your information. A major part of the reason I want to transfer was to experience "Greek Life" and the school I want to transfer to has a lot of programs for Greeks..etc.

This was one reason why I really wanted to wait...was mainly because I don't want to think well sheesh...I joined ABC sorority, but I really get a long better (and like betteR) the girls of XYZ sorority. But y'all have made some great points!! I have a lot to think about. I know that there is at least 1 person on GC from the school I want to transfer to, maybe I should contact her and ask about the competitive-ness...would that be inappropriate?

you are transferring school because of greek life? thats kind of ridiculous. any sorority will tell you that your academics come first. and a small greek life doesn't mean bad or less of an "experience"

FYI: this has been mentioned a large number of times.
Just b/c you transfer to a college without your GLO does not mean you can just start a colony and those who say it are just setting you up for failure!
BEFORE a new GLO can start on a campus local or national the college panhellenic MUST open for expansion. THis must happen before new group can join. Obviously starting a local is much easier but if you are ina national GLO and you transfer you can not just call your NHQ and start a colony. There is a process involved that takes years sometimes. SO PLEASE do not be just saying you can start a colony:reality is it will and may not happen.

I have to agree with this.
You never know what will happen till next year - you may not have the $$ for the out of town school then either, and then you've denied yourself the chance to rush for something that didn't happen anyway.
And I don't think it would be out of line to contact the GCer via PM regarding the school you're thinking of transferring to.

I would agree w/everyone else. Rush now, life is just too unpredictable to wait. Besides, if both groups have chapters at the other school and it works to affiliate (I know you know this can be complicated in many places) then great, if not, well you had a year that you won't forget.
Good Luck.
