“Crete (Illinois) - Ax-Man's House - In the 1970's a man murders his wife and children along with two police officers, with an ax. After killing them he hung them from hooks in the meat shed in the back of the property. He was then chased through the woods near his home by the police until he was finally shot and killed near the road. Upon entering the grounds a strange feeling of being watched is felt, and if you go around to the back of the house you can still see the blood splattered in the meat shed. In the house you will find a staircase that leads into the ceiling. If you go into one of the upstairs bedrooms you will find women’s shoes all over the floor and if you look out the window you will see what looks like a woman hanging from a rope in the tree. You can also still see the path that the ax man ran down to try to avoid the police. He is said to still haunt the bridge near where he died.” From

Now my tale...
I grew up in the far south suburbs of Chicago in the 70s and 80s not too far from Crete. I had friends from there and was familiar with this story. A bunch of us went out to the scene and drove across the haunted bridge but we never saw anything.
Years later after having moved to the southwest suburbs of Chicago, my mom woke up claiming that she heard some strange noise in the house. We looked all around to see if someone had broken into the house and found nothing. I looked in the garage, which was attached, and didn't see anything out of the ordinary, except that someone had left the light on. When I turned the light off, I saw that the light in the attic above the garage was left on. When I pulled the stairway down, my mom started to shout, "That was the noise, that was the noise."
I went up into the attic above the garage and looked around finding nothing out of place. I squeezed through the hole between the garage attic and the house attic, which was right outside my room, and didn't find anything out of place there.
After I came back down and relayed not finding anything to the rest of my family, my brother went up into the attic. After my parents went back to bed my brother came back down from the attic and was very pale.
He proceeds to tell me that he and his friends went back years later to the Ax Man's bridge. As they drove across the bridge the Ax Man started chasing the SUV that they were driving and threw his ax through the back window. The driver of the SUV grabbed the gun that he kept in his glove box (my brother had some interesting friends when he was in high school) and fired at the Ax Man hitting him numerous times. The Ax Man kept chasing them but they drove off. The friend asked my brother to hold on to the ax and the gun for a while so my brother hid them in the corner of the attic above the garage.
At the end of telling his tale he simply said, "They are gone."
Nothing else happened and my brother and I never spoke of the event.
