I have high speed through my cable company. It's good, but I pay through the nose for it, combined with the cable TV it's my most expensive bill every month.

We have Charter Cable and HATE it. They were supposed to have installed all kinds of anti-viral software to protect us. We now have more trojan horses, adware, etc. that they can't get off of our computer. I am going to have to wipe my entire hard drive. But, I just cannot stand the thought of going back to dial-up.

Ditto. And I wouldn't give it up...
I too got some viruses and trojan horses. Got Norton Anti Virus and it worked like penecillin.

Okay I just got some trojan horse viruses and was wondering where they came from...evidently from my new and exciting cable ISP!? Norton found them but WTF how do they not protect against this??? I was blaming the virus on a friend who used my computer one day...haha. I feel like a jackass, I need to apologize to my friend! haha

I have cable internet in my house, but I wanted to keep my old e-mail address. So, I kept my old ISP as well. I've been using ISP West for years and I really like them.

Decide what you are willing to pay then work backwards from there.
Up to $45 a month:
You can have Cable modem. Many analysts expect this price category to fall as DSL service providers continue to drop their prices and improve content. Time warner has 6 month introductory deals ranging from $19.95 to $29.95 and you can do what I do. Keep calling on month 5 of each period and tell them you are cutting it off. They'll extend the offer for another 6 months. I've been doing this with them since May 2003. I'm pretty pleased with Time-Warner. My sister uses them in Houston and is pleased with them as well. This is lightning fast internet. Once you have it, you can never go back.
Up to $30 a month:
Range for most DSL's. SBC offers a $19.95 a month deal thats been a 'limited time offer' thats been around for about 6 months now.
Up to $20 a month
Most dial ups are in this range starting with $6 and moving up. Service at this speed is cheap, but painfully slow.
Good luck.

I'm not sure its fair to say that the viruses "come from" the ISP. In my case, I am sure my computer illiterate DH was responsible for these on our PC. Since he's been using it, I now get 50+ spams a day. (oh, and he was using my email account, too) I'm sure some of these enticing subject lines were too much to pass up - so he'd *open* the spam and allow the virus is. When I asked him about it, I get a very defensive, "I don't know what I opened or not!" That's all I needed to hear to confirm my suspicions. Oh, well. I bought latest Norton and it found 'em and got rid of 'em. I didn't have an *updated* version of Norton; it was years old version...

That's good to know. The thing is I've had a cable modem before and never had these problems...but I was using it through a wireless router so there is a difference because now I'm plugged directly into it. Either way I LOVE Norton for getting rid of my viruses...regardless of how they got on the computer!
