Poor Kid.....guess ya gotta move on?

CHEAP 'SHOT' HITS KID HARD

By DAVID ANDREATTA Education Reporter Fri Jun 17, 5:57 AM ET

A Queens couple claims their daughter's memories of elementary school have been marred by a "horrible" yearbook pho- to, and are demanding the school recall all 200 books and replace the picture.

Michelle Maihepat, of South Ozone Park, said her 11-year-old daughter, Asheana, is so embarrassed by the "bad picture" that she has been crying and hiding her face in shame from her sixth-grade classmates at PS 121 since the yearbooks were distributed Monday.

"For the rest of her life, she's going to have to be ashamed of that horrible picture," Maihepat said.

"Twenty years down the line, she's going to look at this book with her friends, and her friends are going to say, 'What happened to you there?' "

What happened was this: Asheana was home sick on the day in March that most of her classmates posed for the standard cap-and-gown head shot. She took a make-up photo at the school a month later. But school officials said the $32 shoot took place just one day before the deadline to send proofs to the yearbook printer.

Without time to get the proofs, and fearing Asheana would be missing from the yearbook, her teacher — who organized the yearbook project — snapped the extreme close-up shot and sent it to the printer, school officials said.

The school never consulted the Maihepats, who said they expected the professional make-up photo in the yearbook.

Asheana said she does not recall having the quick substitute picture taken. In it, she appears pale and capless against a black background.

Her mother called the school's version of events "a cover-up."

Principal Henry Somers defended the teacher and said he arranged yesterday for the printer to publish a new book for Asheana, but that there was no way the school could recall all the books.

"We bent over backwards to accommodate this parent and we don't have a budget to pay for 200 new books," Somers said. "The teacher who did this went out of her way to be nice so the little girl would have a picture in the yearbook."

Somers signed a check refunding Maihepat $14 for the cost of the yearbook — a gesture the mom called "insulting."

A teary-eyed Asheana said the episode has upset her so much that she has decided to skip graduation next week.

The family says anything less than a total recall is not good enough, reasoning that the yearbook is Asheana's legacy among all her classmates at PS 121.

"Who knows, one day she might be famous or have a lot of money and someone could blackmail her with that picture," Maihepat said.

Asheana, who stayed home from school yesterday, said, "I never expected to see that picture in the yearbook. My friends feel sorry for me."

I'm so confused. If she's only in sixth grade, why is there going to be a graduation ceremony?

Do they think she is the only kid EVER to have a bad yearbook photo?? Or to even *gasp* miss out on her sixth grade photo in the yearbook??

The school did all they could - and yet the parents sue.

And who remembers sicth grade anyway???

My sophomore year picture in the yearbook came out absolutely horrible - yet I nor my parents pitched a colossal hissy-fit over it. And I didn't buy a copy of the 1981 yearbook, either! (Incidentally, that's the only 1980's North Miami Senior High School yearbook I don't have in my collection!)

Wonder how big a POP it would make if someone grabbed them by the ankles and pulled their Head out of their asses?

Damn, do the word dork asses sound wothwhile?

Damn, 6 th grade. Kid probably is an ungly little gnome!

This is to funny not to be real life.

Wonder what rag TV or Print media will pick it up and run with it like a rabid dog?

I hope the get sued for a frivilous Law Suit!

Give me a break. My 7th grade yearbook photo puts other people's yearbook photos to shame but I didn't have my parents complain. People have bad photos. Get over it.

Is this a racial issue? i.e. is the child black and she looks white?

No one looks decent at age 11, let's face it.

And you should wear a cap and gown for high school, college and grad school graduation ONLY. to have 6th graders wear them is downright offensive IMO.

What kind of legacy can you have from a school that dosent even have a name?

Unless she had her hand on her poonanny, how would you be able to blackmail her with it?

Isnt blackmail about secret shit? How do you blackmail someone with public shit.

She wont ever be famous or have a lot of money coming from a school named after a number. Famous-ass people come from schools with the word 'Academy' or some shit in them.

I love it when undeducated people are quoted in the paper.

That's what I don't get about New York schools. You'd think there's enough prominent New Yorkers that they could come up with some names?

Jay-Z Elementary?
Nasir Jones High School?
50 Cent Academy?

'Cause most schools in New York City are identified only by their number, though they do have names as well. PS 121 is not named. When I was but a young pup, I went to PS 220 (Edward Mandel) for kindergarten in Forest Hills, off 108th Street and 62nd Drive.

I really want to see this picture.

It'll serve these whiners right if one of her classmates sells this picture to the press and it winds up all over the national media RIGHT NOW. Then she can stop whining about how she could be blackmailed with it later.

Now if something had actually been done to deface the photo, as in a mustache drawn in or devil horns or something I could see recalling the book ( this actually happened in my high school. They had to re-call everyone's books and they put stickers of the nornal photos over the 3 defaced photos, ) but REALLY, a BAD photo ??!! seriously I don't think ANY one of us would be proud to have our 6th grade photo out there, and I certainly wasn't happy with it back then either.

I went to J.H.S. 190 (Russel Sage) Went there during its heyday in the early 90s. Herd its going down though.

For high school, went to H.S. 440 (Forest Hills)

there was a story about a month or two ago about a high school senior who had "black girl" as her name under the national honor society picture. her senior picture came out fine, and it even listed the page number for the honor society page. it was headline news and the company offered to redo the page and pass it out as an insert.
