Smile New!!!!

I am so glad I found someone to help our group get up and going!!!! I know many of you are limited on the closed rituals but ideas would help a ton. Also is anyone from a school in Nebraska??? My school currently has Theta Phi Alpha, Lambda Phi Omega, and Zeta Tau Omega. Many of the girls in these group portray sorority life as it is in the movies. I also had a horrible rush and pledge process. They said I didn't know what it was like, didn't show enough dedication, and needed to learn more about myself. Um, hello isn't that what your sisters help you with? Well anyways i'm looking for someone who started a local to partner up with or someone just to read our constitution. Out school's student senate denied it saying it was too long for the school I go to. Don't know what they were thinking. Also is it ok to share quotes with other sororities? I have other ideas I would love to have help on ASAP!!! I want to be ready to attack our school in the fall. Everyone can contact me at AIM: kibiciuel, MSN: kibiciuel2004@msn.com, or email me at sganddb@wmconnect.com... Anything and everything you can do would help us out. Oh by the way the name we have is DELTA NU DELTA. One of the founder's has and obssession with legally blonde...lol...NOT ME!!!! I like it since delta means difference or change....And that's just what we're going to do "Change New Change".....again contact me please AIM: kibiciuel, MSN: kibiciuel2004@msn.com or email me at sganddb@wmconnect.com

A couple of suggestions:

1. Don't copy ANYTHING from another sorority if you wanted to be respected. It will look like you're a "wannabe" and if you can't come up with things on your own, people will wonder why you don't just join the sorority you borrowed it from. If you have a unique idea for a sorority, you should come up with a unique motto/quote/ect.

2. I love Legally Blonde as well, but seriously. I mean anyone who has seen that movie is so not going to take you seriously. That's not the way you want to come on the scene.

3. I seriously suggest you look at ALL the options out there before you start another organization. Between NPC, NPHC, Multicultural Sororities, Latina, Asian, ect. organizations, there are over 200 sororities already in existance. I know that you have ideals that you'd like to impart on your campus and it would be easier and you would have way more support nationally if you joined a national. I just say this because lately, there have been new organizations starting almost monthly and a lot of them seem to either 1) fold on themselves within a year or two or 2) have copied some of their ritual, symbols, ect. from another organization (real or fictional).

4. Do a google search. There is already a sorority called Delta Nu Delta that was founded at West Texas A&M University just 3 years ago. If you are going to start a new sorority, I really really suggest looking at Baird's which is a book that lists sororities and fraternities and also searching the internet. Come up with something that is creative and represents you.

Hopefully this helps. PM me if you want.

In the end, it's up to you to decide what you want your organization to be. You don't have to change your name and/or your motto. I'm just sharing that it's typically looked down upon to have the same info as another org. Nobody will care that it was by happenstance. Look through other threads on this board. All people will see is that you were founded after another organization with the same information. I would worry more about the motto than the name.

In terms of national expansion, a lot of organizations do NOT have requirements on the number of members in the chapter at a time. Look at multicultural organizations and other organizations that are more national than starting your own organization, but local enough so that they don't have a numbers requirement. I don't know much about NPC, but I believe that they usually have chapters in the 20's? There are a lot of orgs that don't have that type of requirement.

I agree with preciousjeni on that co-sign. You didn't want to join the other sorority, so why copy from them? When we started the local I'm in, we made a list of the things the other sororities had (mascot, colors, symbols, etc.) and immediately crossed those off our list of possibilities. Now, not only do we not share anything, we have things that mean something JUST to us. Also, you asked about rituals. You and your sisters need to come up with things that are meaningful to you. Here's an example: This year, my sorority had its first actual initiation. The ritual was pretty bare bones. But now, after that initiation, we have found more things that are symbolic to us. Don't forget that a sorority is not set in stone on anything. Traditions evolve, you don't just come up with them and they stay the same. If you need any other advice, PM me, and I'll be glad to help if I can.

We got our active member pins done through PinSource, they were great about customer service and delivery was quick. Plus they offer free set up sometimes and have a lot of different options as far as metals and what have you.

Does anyone know if the name Phi Theta Xi is taken??? I've done some searches but I did that on the Delta name too and didn't find anything. Then when I came on here others found it. I would appreciate it.

That one looks like a local criminology club. Kibbie, go here http://www.google.com/search?q=%22ph...&start=30&sa=N and look at the last listing. I was barely looking for the listing and found it. You can follow trails that way. I'm not sure if that's how 33girl does her searches, but it works. You look for something, get a hit and then follow it back to its source; in this case, follow it back to the school.

When, you search, be sure to look at all the pages. Also, use all the resources you can. For example,

www.greekpages.com

And as someone mentioned previously, http://www3.telus.net/greek/greekorgs.html

Anyone know the link to Ariesrising's webpage? That's a good place to start too.
