Question Animosity

As a non-greek who was once seeking knowledge on various organizations and why I should join them, I came to notice that a lot of organizations had personal as well as organizational dislikes towards other organizations.

My question is ...
Why do you all think that there is so much animosity between greeks today?

I personally think that whenever you join something you feel that it is the absolute best and that you can't see why anyone else would want to join anything other than that of your choice. You are able to experience all the benefits and wonderful aspects of your organization and sometimes are unaware of the mishaps, but then again you could be very much aware. But regardless of that you see that there is so much to offer. And when someone chooses elsewhere and try to down your organization that builds up a lot of animosity. And it could be carried on for years sometimes decades, and centuries. No one likes for people to talk about them, classify them, nor bring anything that they cherish down.

I chose Sigma Gamma Rho, the keyword being chose. What organizations are in the hearts of others in no way affected my decision. I went to highscool with three other devastating divas and the funny thing is that we were close as hell and we are the same today but each one of us joined a different sorority. When we are together people stare because we hug ,we chant and we have a ball and there has not been a time when I have sad anything bad about any organization and they won't say anything bad about Sigma. The thing is I loved these women before we entered our respective Greek Lettered Organizations. We are a part of organzations that were there before we were even born and will continue to strive after we die. We did not make the GLO's and they did not make us. There are Greeks out there that carry the attitude of mine,so you want to join my organization, I don't feel that way and I don't think anyone should feel as if they are the end all,be all. That attitude gets a person into nothing but trouble. It is possible to be proud of your organization without unneccessary conceit. My advice would be to go with what you know if YOU do YOUR research nine times out of ten you'll be able to tell if someone is feeding you bull****, don't eat it, walk away.

Delight

I like that soror!!!

But to answer the question:
The animosity between orgs comes from people thinking they're better than others. But I have to agree with my soror... People have to remember that being an XYZ shouldn't change your attitude towards other human beings. I respect everyone because I am a child of God BEFORE I am a daughter a 7 Wonderful Educators. It disturbs me to think that those caught up in the "Greek Hype" who can't at least respect each other based on our respective founders visions, can't even respect others just because they're human beings.

Just a bit of advice for all prospectives:
If and when you do cross those burning sands, PLEASE don't get caught up in the HYPE! It's not worth the energy.
And for all Sorors and Greek Family who ARE caught up in the hype, can we please calm down? I know the LIGHT is mesmerizing, but it should not be blinding!! Yall know what I mean.

i also believe that the animosity comes from closed minded people. once they join a sorority or fraternity they immediately forget that others are out there doing the same good that their GLO is doing.

Cool

Greetings to the Ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., my Fellow Sisters in Greekdom! Please forgive me for posting in your forum, but the "animosity issue" seems to be an ongoing one!

My best friend (a Zeta) posted this very same topic in the general forum about a month ago, and to my surprise it was virtually ignored. I agree, wholeheartedly with what has been stated. I think alot of the individuals that fall into this clique, so to speak, are close-minded and unknowledgeable.

One should NEVER allow the organization to make him/her. He/She SHOULD make the organization! As SoloRho stated I am/was a child of God, before I was a child of my Founders. I think it is key for us to keep God in our hearts and minds, as well as the "vision" of our Founders.

As it was stated before, "Each BGLO thinks that they are the best." But what's even better, is that we ALL work to improve our communities and uplift our people!!

Ditto Sisterfriend
Not only do people not realize that WE make our organizations, but our attitudes will reflect on our orgs. I mean we know that our orgs shouldnt be stereotyped by the actions of a few members, but unfortuanately, they can be. We have to be careful. No one is going to want to be a member of ABC if those ladies are always talking about the XYZ's, etc... Or we may prevent a prospective from "seing the light" of another org if we're constantly downing each other. They may take our competitive exchanges as true rivalries and dislikes. Bottome line: it all is just useless and needs to stop.
