University of San Diego

WHY WHY WHY can't ZTA tame the wild west? I heard A Chi O has been invited to colonize at Univ. of San Diego...but Zeta has a fairly recent inactive chapter.

(I was on campus way back when at Cal Poly Pomona and helped lead the way for ZTA to come on as the first national greek organization & I think they are still going strong.)

Any input??

I'm sure this isn't totally the answer but it may be part of the reason we don't have a large presence in Cali.

Look at the states where ZTA has many strong chapters: Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Alabama, North Carolina. It's not just because it's the South. I think the reason we're so strong in those states is because we have strong chapters at the bigger schools in those states such as UGA, Texas, Bama, UF, FSU, UNC, and USC-Columbia. When there is a strong chapter present at a larger school, you have more alumni graduating and getting involved (and donating money). Also, the whole word-of-mouth thing helps, too. We have strong chapters at UF, FSU, and UCF and because of this, ZTA is very well-known across Florida as one of the sororities to join at Florida schools. I've known about ZTA since my sophomore year in high school!
Unfortunately, our chapters at the larger Cali school such as Cal Berkeley, USC, and UCLA are now defunct. The ZTA name just isn't as big in California now because of this. Also, when you're not graduating members from larger chapters at larger schools, you don't have as many alum members to help start a new chapter (and donate $$$$...a big factor!).
I know that our California chapters are strong and I hope that there will be more chapters one day in that state but I know colonizing in California (or any western state) won't be as easy as colonizing a chapter in Florida or South Carolina!

kkw27012, is your first name Kathy? As in the ZTA that moved from Texas to go to grad school and started Theta Omega? If you are who I think you are, I'm so excited to see you posting here.

I am a Theta Omega from Cal Poly, Pomona! I pledged in 1996 and am a very proud alumna. They are doing awesome. They actually just won Greek Week and have been at total every quarter for the past 4-5 years.

It's exciting that the chapter will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

In regard to your question, I think that a lot of it is the reasons that ZTAngel listed. Unfortunatly, we are no longer at the big California schools. Many people around here don't know about ZTA unless they attend one of the 3 schools that we're at. I don't think its from lack of alumnae support. We have 8 alumnae chapters in Southern California alone. I wish we could add more chapters out here as well.

I'm looking forward to reading your response!

Cool Cal Poly Pomona

CntryZTA5,

Yes, darlin...I be the one! I still have pictures from the Installation Banquet, the charter members, the chain, etc!

One of these days, I'll get busy and duplicate them to email on to the chapter. They'd probably get a kick out of seeing the original group of Theta Omegas...don't you think?!?

Yes, I am back in Texas (my Zeta roots) outside the Austin area. As you probably know, ZTA is very strong here and I am so very glad to see Theta Omega doing extremely well.

My two sons both dated Zetas...one is a married pilot now and the other is a Phi Delt in college here. My email is kkw@zeecon.com Stay in touch, sweetie!!

ZLAM,
Kathy
