NPC Expansion

Hi Everyone,
I just have a quick question. I've seen in a couple instances on greek chat that, in order for NPC expansion, one has to start a local sorority first. I was just curious if this usually happens. And, if so, I wanted to know why. I know this isn't common at all when it comes to B/L/MGLOs. Thanks.

Just to clarify. Expansion takes place on a campus. Extension is when NPC sororities establish a new chapter on campus.

NPC extension takes place whenever a Campus Panhellenic feels that there is a need for another organization in order to accomodate the growing sorority interest at that one location.

If a local is established with the intent of becoming an NPC, then great. But it's not mandatory for it to start out that way. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but sororities present to the campus, the Campus Panhellenic votes in the new sorority, and the chosen sorority usually conducts Recruitment after Formal Recruitment is over. This is how the colony would go about gaining their members. You'll hear people call them "chapter founders" from time to time.

lolz, while I was writing the post, I was trying to remember which one was the right one to use and could feel the first post mentioning it.

Anyway, so why is it that some NPC's ask for a local to be set up.
i.e. Rush at UCSC - I believe a sorority asked Corina to start up a local first before extension (?)

OTW is definitely on the right track. With approval of the Collegiate Panhellenic Council and/or university administration, an NPC colony can be established in 3 different ways. 1. An established local sorority is absorbed. 2. An interest group is absorbed. 3. From the ground up, where there is no absorption.

In some cases, there is a local sorority or an interest group but they may not have enough people for consideration. Some NPC groups would like the membership numbers to be any where from 25 – 35 or ¾ the size of the largest NPC on campus. This may or may not have been the case at UCSC.

That was only one instance and one sorority. There was only one other NPC group there - it might have been that the sorority in question wanted to make sure there was demand for another NPC.
