Villanova: Sigma Alpha Epsilon Golf Outing for Children's Miracle Network

Fraternity raises money in golf outing

While many students were promoting their own organizations and showing prospective freshmen around campus this past Saturday for Candidate's Day, brothers from several University fraternities spent the day golfing for charity. The golf outing, organized by Sigma Alpha Epsilon, raised $13,670.95 for the Children's Miracle Network.

As a national program, CMN has a policy of re-distributing all donations in the area from which they originated; in this case, all of the money raised will go to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The donations will ensure that sick children have access to quality medical treatment regardless of the family's ability to pay.

The event was held at the Jeffersonville Golf Club, located about 20 minutes from the campus. The day included a barbecue lunch, a round of golf with various skill competitions throughout the day and a sit-down dinner at the course's banquet hall, at which time prizes were awarded.

There were a total of 57 golfers, each with many different sponsors. The golfers included brothers of SAE, members of the newest fraternity Sigma Chi Lambda and several alumni. The day was made possible by a $5,000 donation from the Miracle Sponsor, ING, a financial group.

The University chapter of SAE was one of 110 chapters across the country that organized projects to participate in the fraternity's annual True Gentleman Day of Service. Now in its fourth year, the True Gentleman Day of Service is part of a larger initiative, the National Youth Service Day.

In the past three years, the University's chapter of SAE has sponsored a run/walk for CMN, which raised over $13,500 for the charity.

This year, the organization decided to re-focus its efforts by having a golf outing instead. Because of the success of the event, planning for next year's Children's Miracle Network Classic-2nd Annual Golf Outing has already begun.

"It was just great to be a part of something so special; to be able to raise $13,000 for a wonderful cause is amazing," Dave Nigro, an SAE brother said. "I'm really proud of how the whole fraternity was able to make this a success."

Good job Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Now what is interesting is that since 1992, the Children's Miracle Network (CMN) is Sigma Chi's suggested beneficiary of proceeds from chapter community service projects. I believe there is currently a Sigma Chi colony at Villanova so I wonder if the colony also donates toward CMN.

Regardless, it's good to hear that $13,670.95 was raised for a worthy cause.
