Valencia

I'll be studying abroad through FSU in Valencia from May 6th to June 17th. Besides taking 9 hours (a.k.a. easy A's), my dorm (which has the coolest name-Galileo Galilei!) is within walking distance from the beach! Has anybody gone before, and if so, any suggestions on what I should do/visit? I plan on spending a weekend in Ibiza at some point, any tips on how to get there/where to stay etc? Thanks!!!!!!!!

p.s. Having spent 7 years speaking any sort of form of Latin American Spanish, exactly how much will the Valenthianos be able to understand me, lol?

Congrats that sounds awesome. I haven't been to Valencia (its in Spain right? lol) but they shoudl be able to understand you. Have you studied Spanish (as spoken in Mexico) or Castellano (the "version" of spanish spoken in Spain)? Either way, there are going to be some discrepancies with the way words are said, but overall everything should be good. Just remember to try not to speak English. My history teacher in high school (who is Mexican) went to Spain for vacation and went into a restaurant/bar thing and spoke English was look frowned upon. No one wanted to talk to him or anything, so a day or so later he came back, spoke Spanish and was treated so kindly. The Spanish knew he wasn't from Spain, but being from Mexico was (i guess) more desirable than being from America.

Hope you have a lot of fun!!!

I learned to speak Latin American Spanish; but my boyfriend learned the Castellano variety of Spanish (via 12 weeks in Malaga, Spain). When he practices his Spanish with me, I can't understand a word he says! Then again, my boyfriend is British so that English accent of his kinda mucks things up.

At any rate, I've never been to Spain myself; however I understand that Ibiza can be pretty crazy. The coast of Spain is a very popular summer holiday destination for Europeans and thus it can get crowded and "goofy". You'll be there early enough, so you'll probably get to enjoy the coast and nightlife without some of the problems.

As long as they don't discriminate against my bad L.A. Spanish then I should be okay...and I hope that Ibiza is open for the season while I'm there...I know some people who went for a whole semester missed going the whole time, but I don't think that should be a problem for May...at least I hope not!
