Phi Facts

Hi ladies! I was wondering if any of you have any interesting Alpha Phi facts. The recruitment mentors are having a challenge for each person to find the most interesting facts about their chapter. Thanks.

Here's a list of familiar facts:

Alpha Phi Facts: A Remarkable History
  • Alpha Phi is called the first inter-sorority conference of the original nine sororities. This resulted in the creation of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), which still exists today.
  • Alpha Phi is a true "international" sorority. It has maintained the longest continuous presence in Canada of any sorority. The Xi chapter was established at the University of Toronto in 1906.
  • Alpha Phi was founded in 1872 by 10 of the first 20 women to enter Syracuse University.
  • Alpha Phi is the fourth oldest national women's fraternity.
  • Alpha Phi is one of only three international sororities.
  • Three of the original 10 became members of Phi Beta Kappa
  • Three of our founders were listed in Who's Who of America: Clara Bradley Burdette, Martha Foote Crow, and Rena Michaels Atchison.
  • Alpha Phi is pronounced Alpha "fee" (long "e") not "fie," because "Alpha" is a vowel and "Phi" is pronounced "fee" when it follows a vowel.
  • Alpha Phi's Creed was written in 1912 by Annette Hall Hitchcock.
  • Alpha Phi's official pin was adopted in 1908.
  • Alpha Phi's official crest was adopted in 1922.
  • Alpha Phi's password was changed from German to Greek at the 1922 Convention.
  • Alpha Phi's original colors were blue and gold.*
  • The Alpha Phi Foundation was established in 1957.
  • Alpha Phi chapters are named in alphabetical order as they are incorporated**
  • Alpha Phi has over 175 active alumnae chapters.

*In 1879, the colors were changed to the more distinctive silver and bordeaux. Blue and gold were the colors of the Fraternity Delta Upsilon, and the change was made in order to truly set our colors apart from any other Greek organization's.

**All except the Eta chapter at Boston University. This chapter should have been Gamma--or the third chapter--but was incorporated as the Eta chapter because it had seven founding members and Eta is the seventh letter of the Greek alphabet.

Alpha Phi Firsts: Blazing a Trail
  • Alpha Phi called the world's first inter-sorority meeting, a group that later became the National Panhellenic Conference
  • A trailblazing organization from the start, Alpha Phi built the world's first sorority house on the campus of Syracuse University in 1872.
  • Alpha Phi was the first sorority to use traveling delegates to monitor chapters. These women are now known as educational leadership consultants and district governors.
  • Alpha Phi was the first women's society to use Greek letters as an emblem.
  • Alpha Phi was the first sorority to establish a foundation.
  • Alpha Phi was the first NPC group to establish a presence on the World Wide Web.
  • Alpha Phi was the first sorority to publish a book-length history.

  • Alpha Phi Alumna Georgia Neese Gray was the first female treasurer of the United States. She was appointed by President Harry Truman.
  • The screenplay for the hit movie, Mrs. Doubtfire was written by Randy Mayem Singer, an Alpha Phi alumna.
  • The U.S. Congress recognized the contributions of Alpha Phi lady, Frances E. Willard, by placing a statue of her in Statuary Hall in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol--she was the first woman to be so recognized.

My favorite Phi-Phact actually is related to the Alpha Phi Foundation! The Alpha Phi Foundation is one of the oldest GLO-based philanthropic organizations (started in 1956) and one of the best run! I believe last year The Alpha Phi Foundation raised more money than any other GLO philanthropy, and I know that foundation is one of the best run GLO philanthropies having something like only 18 cents per dollar (maybe it was even less) going to operating costs....meaning we turn the most money around to the causes we support! Now that makes me proud to know Alpha Phis have such big hearts!

Hey TxAphi -
Just an FYI that I'm sure you already know, but Canada is not a state!! It's a whole country, just as big as the USA. Which means that having 6 chapters in the whole country is really not a huge number! It's just a start. We'd love to see more. (see the thread about where you would like to see AP re-colonize.) Anyways, I'm sure you know this. It's just a little thing that we Canadians get annoyed at all the time. We are not another US state!!
AOE
(yup - we're a little defensive about this point. Can you tell???)

Thanks, yogiPhi, I definitely know that Canada isn't another state as many of my closest friends are Canadian I just didn't want to leave Canada out since 6 is actually quite an impressive number of chapters in relation to all NPC groups in Canada! I corrected the placement in the post above because I still think Canada should be mentioned.

In the updated 'Alpha Phi Milestones' (below) that "fact" is not included (I don't think it was ever really on an official publication of Alpha Phi, am not sure where it came from, but it is on many A*Phi chapter sites.... most likely one website listed it as a Phi Fact, and it started getting copied to other sites much like celebrities that aren't really members of a greek org are listed as members on chapter sites but not on the HQ's site.)

Alpha Phi has an outstanding record of accomplishments

Alpha Phi became the first women's Fraternity in America to build and occupy its own chapter house. This tradition continues today as Alpha Phi owns and managers 80 sorority houses.

Alpha Phi was the first National sorority established in the Northeast.

The Alpha Phi Quarterly was established in 1886. It has been published continuously to the present day and has received numerous awards and recognition.

Alpha Phi has the oldest chapter in Canada. Xi Chapter was founded at the University of Toronto in 1906. Alpha Phi owns the oldest sorority house in Canada.

In 1902, Alpha Phi called the inter-sorority meeting that resulted in the formation of the association now known as the National Panhellenic Conference. Today the Panhellenic Conference is made up of 26 member organizations.

Alpha Phi was the first National Sorority to have a web site. Today you can visit Alpha Phi’s website at www.alphaphi.org.

The Alpha Phi Foundation was founded in 1956. Alpha Phi was the first sorority to create her own foundation. 2006 marks the 50th anniversary.

In 2004 Alpha Phi launched our own red dress campaign to support cardiac care for women. Alpha Phi has supported Cardiac Care since 1946.

In 2003 “Reel Connections” a multi-media educational tool was introduced to chapter leaders.

Alpha Phi supports alumnae initiation for selected outstanding women. This tradition began when Alpha Phi’s earliest members invited Frances Willard, a noted leader in women’s suffrage and education for women to be the first alumnae initiate in 1875.

Alpha Phi was the first women's fraternity to use traveling delegates, known today as Educational Leadership Consultants.

Canadian Pride

Am surprised that no Canadians have posted this already -

KAT was the first sorority to have a chapter in Canada, at the University of Toronto. But that chapter is closed.

Alpha Phi has the oldest active collegiate chapter in Canada - our Xi Chapter at the University of Toronto.
