Preoccupied in my recliner at 2:00 in the morning one night, I notice a seven-foot basketball player sitting on my couch with a Final Four ring. He bounces a sharp glare at me and asks, “How do you guys do this every week?”
“Do what?” I say.
“Get these girls here, son!”
I consider that the girl sitting in my lap might be influencing his opinion, but the wheels start turning in my inebriated little head. This future NBA star envies me? Holy crap! A little clarity trickles down through what’s left of my brain cells after power hour._ We’re rock stars, we frat boys here in our little white Tau Kappa Epsilon house. And I must admit that we’re not just a drinking club or a support group for assholes. We are beer kickball studs, professional costume wearers, tug champs, the kids to hang out with on study abroad trips, high-quality road trip organizers, campus leaders and, under most circumstances, the spirit of Georgia Tech.
Because here in our little Atlanta world, off-campus parties suck, most (not all) kids in the dorms suck and the standard academic workload for every major seriously sucks. I’m a ramblin’ wreck from Georgia Tech and a helluva frat-astic liberal arts major (we can’t all be engineers). I also dream big and party just the same and, more often than not, party with ridiculously good basketball players. All I’m trying to say is that, dude, fun at Georgia Tech means going Greek, unless of course you enjoy getting play from your wireless mouse.
