Dream Conventions
I was talking with some women at our Officer Academy the other weekend about where would be a fabulous place to have convention. A place that both alumnae and actives would get into. So if you could have convention anywhere, what city or hotel would you go to?
Thanks for the input!
I did a search and couldn't find anything, so if there is a thread on this, I can look at that too...

I've always thought that a convention on board a cruise ship would be fabulous. But its probably not practical. you'd have to share the ship and deal with sea sickness.
I have attended 13 (will be 14 next week) National Conventions for Alpha Xi Delta. The best by far was at the Breakers Hotel in West Palm Beach.

San Antonio !!!
I've always been wishing for San Antonio, Texas. I visited there for an Alamo Bowl game. What a great city to visit ! Soooo many things within walking distance of the Riverwalk area.
Hotel ? Any along the Riverwalk would do. There are 2 large Marriott properties attached to the Riverwalk. One of them is attached to the convention center itself (which is also situated along the Riverwalk).
The city has alot to see and do. Tons of shopping, tons of eateries and drinking establishments, alot of live entertainment, and oh yeah.. there's some history stuff there too.... the Alamo !!! And some other history sites are nearby like the governor's mansion. I took a short bus tour trip, a few hours long, that took us to the Mission de San Antonio, which is a mission, like the Alamo, but still has a working church inside its walls. And the tour went through a residential area with colorful houses. There's a neat observation tower next to the convention center.
Yes, during the summer months, when conventions typically occur, it would be rather hot and humid, but I attended one in Chicago last summer and it was just as hot and humid. Besides, if you're attending the convention on sorority/fraternity businees, you're supposed to be inside most of the time, attending the events, meetings, workshops, meals, etc.
San Antonio gets my 1st vote. My 2nd vote would be Orlando. But going to a convention there would kill me, because I would be dying to go to Walt Disney World instead of convention functions !!!

The stabilizers of the ship are very good for dealing with the rocking of the ship. You wouldn't have to worry about that, so much.

I called Royal Caribbean to see if it was an option (i'm a Convention Coordinator for AST) and they sadly said that there has to be someone who is at least 25 in every room that has someone under 21 in it. So it would be immensely difficult to ensure we had that. It was an insurance thing I guess. I have to admit I was totally heart broken...

I hardly get a chance to leave the hotel during Conventions so it could be Timbuktu for all I care. Detroit would be ideal for me, so I wouldn't have to deal with travel I've been to 3 conventions, two of them in Chicago. Both Chicago conventions, I had a half day to sight see. In Atlanta, I didn't leave the hotel except to go back to the airport! When I'm 70, I look forward to going to a Convention with no responsibility attached!

I go to San Antonio at least once a year for a trade show my company attends. The Riverwalk is ok but it does get old after a while. I suppose it would be fun with lots of sisters, though.
Our convention is in Orlando next year, and I am REALLY looking forward to that!

Atlantis would be heaven, but I'm sure the costs would be prohibitive!
Ditto WDW. I've only heard good things about that Convention site so I'd love for us to return. Of course, I'd have to add extra days on to indulge my WDW obsession!!!

Our Karnea (International Convention) was here in Denver last time.
There's a ton of stuff to do in the city -- plus all of the stuff that's within easy travel distance.
If it were downtown, it's within walking distance of a lot of tourist stuff, an amusement park, any of the sports venues and tons of bars/clubs, etc. (For those over 21, of course...)
Then, of course, there are the mountains.
Pretty much any of the big "chain" hotels would be fine.

Beta Sigma Phi does a cruise ship convention/getaway every year. (We have state/regional conventions, but no national convention).

San Antonio 2006!
Glad to hear good things about San Antonio.
Kappa Alpha Theta is headed there for our 2006 convention. Lucky us! But I have to say, Atlantis sounds pretty awsome, as long as we are dreaming ...
