I'm sorry, but...DON'T DO IT!!!!
Sorry I had. I had a bad experience with highlighting my onw hair, and yes I used the same kit. Don't do it. The highligghts weren't in the proper place and the colour didn't come out. Don't do it, no matter what kit you're using.
However, if you're still going to do it. Have someone else do it for you (that is...have someone use the kit on your hair, don't do it yourself). It's much easier.

See if someone can help you. I got a big splotch on the back of my head because I couldn't see what I was doing.
If you use a cap, don't pull too much hair through! My aunt did that when she was helping me and I ended up blonde with brown highlights. We also waited twice as long because I thought I should be able to see the color before I rinsed it out. Did I mention I was platinum blonde when my natural hair color is about 2 shades lighter than black?

Lady Pi Phi speaks the truth. Run. Run far away from DIY highlighting. RUN!!!
I did this several months ago and ended up with yellow blonde roots and the highlights did not go all the way to the ends of my hair. Had I been in about seventh grade and living in a fantasy world where I would be a famous rock star by age 16, it may have been slightly cool. Luckily I was able to fix it by coloring my hair a brown slightly darker than my natural color. I think I almost cried.

Take it back to the store. Look in the phone book and see if one of the nice salons in town has a training school nearby. It is the best way to get your hair done inexpensively. In LA we have a Vidal Sassoon Academy. A lot of college students go there to get their hair done. It's not like your grandma's hair school perm type place.

Please let us all stop you from doing it yourself!!! I tried it once in college and it was a disaster!!! My friend tried it recently and ended up having to spend about 200 bucks getting it fixed because the highlights were the color of urine...haha. And she has pretty light hair to begin with, a dirty blond-ish color. The suggestion of going to a beauty school is really good, I've heard some good things about the Paul MItchell school in San Diego. Seriously though, don't take chances with your hair!!!!

I have done my own highlighting before with no problem about 10 years ago too. I used a highlighting kit by Loreal (I can't think of the name but it came with two colors and a comb). Once I applied the color, I wrapped it in foil, so I'd know where it was and I just highlighted the crown of my head. They looked SO good.
Fast forward to this time last year. I purchased a highlighting kit by Revlon (DO NOT BUY THIS ONE - IT STRIPS YOUR HAIR COLOR FIRST AND THEN DEPOSITS THE COLOR - IT SUCKS ON ICE!!!!)
BIG MISTAKE. I ended up looking like Tony The Tiger - dark brown hair with orange strips (the color was susposed to be honey). I didn't go to work the next morning because I was at Walgreens looking for a rinse to cover up the mess.
So proceed with caution....

Is there one in San Diego too? I have gone to the one in Costa Mesa and its pretty good and reasonably priced.
I did the DIY coloring once and ended up with carrot top colored hair...we're talking bright orange when naturally my hair is dark brown. It took me two days to wash it out...it was a nightmare.

I have done the DIY highlights before. Both times I used Loreal products. It was the one in the red box that comes with dye and the highlighter. All that product really does is dye your hair a different color and then lighten the dyed color. I did try the Feria highlight kit and my head ended up ALL red because I went overkill with it. I've decided to never go with highlights again because I'm terrible at retouching and the roots grow out and it looks weird and I'm lazy...
See if someone can help you judge where to put highlights... or if they can just do it for you. Otherwise, just have them done professionally or by students at beauty schools in your area.
