Interns/ Dress for success!

The summer internship is nearly upon us. And, once again, my place of employment will be chock full of short skirted, belly button exposed, and jean clad, backwards-baseball-hatted interns.

If you're going to be interning.. PLEASE... take some time to research proper dress for the job you'll be working at. Remember, an internship could end up as a full time job for you-- or-- it could provide you with some valuable contacts. This is a very important step in your future! Take it seriously!

Dress to impress, NOT like you're going out clubbing. Dress like a professional!

In most offices and other places of employment offering internships (particularly in the big cities) that means no jeans, no t-shirts, no low cut shirts, no belly buttons showing, no overly short skirts, no sneakers, no thongs or "cracks" showing from too low pants, and no baseball caps.

And girls, for goodness sakes, wear a bra. Nobody wants to see if you're cold or not! Keep the heavy make up, dangly earrings, and clanky jewelry for a date.

The young men and women who land jobs are those who dress conservatively and professionally.

I often wonder why colleges don't offer a course in how to dress for an internship and job interview!

more tips for interns

attend as many mettings as you possibly can, and speak out at them if you have something, anything. Personal Ancedote: my office didn't have curb side recycling b/c of a neighborhood assc. ordinance (it was an Equity Theatre and Fine Arts Musem sharing buildings and office spaces,...i live in a mil fordhole) so I said something about at a meeting and was put in charge of the company wide recyling program. Seriously. I did other stuff there too, but the point is, go kick ass. You get to play office. Have fun, go kick ass.
