Perhaps No Olympics for NY
http://story.news.yahoo.com/fc?cid=3...s&cat=Olympics
Too bad for NY. It looks like their bid for the 2012 Olympic Games might be down the tubes.

I hope London gets the bid - but for purely selfish reasons: Most of my family lives in London and I know a lot of them are coming to stay with us in 2010 for our Olympics, so I think the Vancouver side of the family needs to return the favour and shack up with them for a couple weeks and check out the Olympics over there. Plus I would have free accomodations for 2 Olympics in a row - that's something I would never have a imagined!

If my memory serves me correctly, wasn't there an issue with water pollution in Queens right across the East River from Manhattan? I can't find the article on Yahoo/AP...someone post it if they find it?

I'm surprised at the 59%! I figured it would be about 25%.
I mean, the idea is very cool, but the logistics would be horrific! Christmas time is bad enough, I can't even imagine what it would be like with all those extra people here, stopping in the middle of the street to look at things, not knowing how to swipe a metro card, clogging the subway cards....Please don't let it be here, please, please, please.........

For special events, the city has always been smart about things like that though. It would be no more hectic than the Republican convention or even that big ship festival we have a few years ago with all the ships that sailed in (people still remember right?).

The city can handle it better than any other on the planet. We have more special events, like all the UN business that goes on, than any other city on a regular basis.
Working against us is that the IOC does not like to award consecutive Olympics to the same continent.
Working in our favor is Mayor Bloomberg, and not just because he's a Phi Psi. He's pulled stuff out of his ass that blows my mind (getting rid of the Board of Education after 5 consecutive mayors failed to do so,) despite being an "amateur politician."
Mike Bloomberg is probably the only mayor in world that truly has the inside connections to swing votes our way.
On the surface, it looks like its going to London, or maybe Paris. None of us know what's going on behind the scenes. We'll know in four months.

I plan on being out of the tri-state area by 2012, but I don't think NYC should or is going to win...

I think it would be really great if New York won. It would force them to finish major infrastructure projects on a deadline - the extension of the 7 train, more housing in long island city, the convention center, the stadium (which i am completely in favor of - why should ny'ers have to schlep to jersey from brooklyn to see any non-baseball outdoors sporting even - i am sick of all these so-called new york teams that never actually play here)
plus its a matter of pride too, all the major citys of the world have hosted a summer olympics - why can't we?

As much as I think NYC's chances are diminishing, they would be my first choice as a location due to the fact that three other contestant cities have all hosted previous games (London in 1908 and 1948; Paris in 1900 and 1924; Moscow in 1980).
I'm not sure about the facilities or the plan in Madrid, but NYC has some work to do - work good for the city.
It would be interesting to see the Olympics in Moscow after the fall of the Soviet Union, though.

I remember the ships Rudey. I think that we had a World Cup also.
I wouldn't mind if the Olympics came to NYC.

Rudey, were you here for the convention? I personally thought it was horrible, (and not just because I hated the candidate! ) and I wasn't even on that side of the city for the most part. Though my commute in was great because so many people took the week off!
And while I think the city is probably the best in the world at handling stuff like this, it doens't mean it would be pleasent. The amount of people coming in for an Olympics is a whole different ball game - way more than the convention and tons more than the ships. I just think it would be crazy...in a bad way.

Yea, i'm suppose to believe a poll funded and organized by a rival city? Paris just wants to put out bad press to increase their chances. Until the IOC makes a choice, everyone has a shot.
My money is on London personally...

I don't want to see the games here. It would just be a huge headache.
Just for ishts and giggles, I looked at the NYC Olympic game site. Do you guys know it takes only 26 minutes to get from Queens(Olympic Village) to East Rutherford NJ? I would like to know who timed that and at what time, 3am with a police escort?

I'm hoping for London, and have a Back the Bid 2012 phone card. The adverts I've seen so far have been really good, but most people don't seem overly optimistic about it. Who knows?
