Got this analysis about the story:

Lets examine the premise: 2000 miles per month is costing Jayson $500 in fuel. That means each mile costs about $.25, or 8 miles to the gallon at an average price of $2.00/gallon(actual US average today is $1.89).

Jayson gets 8 miles to the gallon, tops. That means he is commuting to school in a 1962 Dodge Power Wagon 4x4. That means Jayson is lying, the paper is lying, Jayson is severely mentally handicapped, or all of the above.

Horrible idea, but I love the analysis.

Every gallon of gas is already taxed about 60 to 80 cents, I think, so we are already being taxed per mile.

For energy conservation's sake, people driving small cars with high gas mileage use less gas, and rightfully pay less gas tax.

The existing system works fine. The proposed changes will only benefit the suppliers of the technology (and it's repairmen).
